KARACHI:

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) will stop renting the poolside of its sports complex at Kashmir Road from April 1 in the wake of growing complaints about people littering in the swimming pool.

The municipal commissioner, Matanat Ali Khan, took the decision after a meeting of senior KMC officials. “We haven’t closed all the wedding lawns,” he said. “For now, it was decided to stop renting the area around the swimming pool.”

According to Khan, he was informed by his subordinates that the guests dumped leftover chicken wings and other garbage in the pool. There was also an incident when a swimmer jumped into the pool and was injured after he hit a sharp object.

Khan also said that they will stop using the football ground except for what it was built for.

The commercial use of the complex, which also includes two grounds for cricket and football and a tennis court, was also challenged in the Sindh High Court in March 2004 by the residents of Kashmir Road.

A good and wise decision provided it is implemented. We are a greedy nation thinking of only ourselves.
