The court set February 29 as the date for the hearing of Asghar Khan’s petition filed in the apex court a decade earlier.
Asghar, who was heading the little-known Pakistan Tehrik-e-Istaqlal, recently joined the more prominent PTI at a joint news conference with Imran Khan.
Both Khans had called upon Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to immediately take up the filed by Asghar to punish those politicians and political groups who have been receiving funds from the Inter Services Intelligence agency (ISI).
Figures from Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz are among those groups who have allegedly received money from the ISI in the past to run their election campaigns. Nawaz Sharif’s party is one of Imran’s major rivals, and both parties have publicly critised each other of late.
“I urge the Chief Justice of Pakistan that the Asghar Khan petition is immediately reopened,” Imran had said. “Those political parties who have been getting money from the agencies don’t have any right to rule the country. Neither can they protect the public interest.”
Asghar was one of the top leaders at the centre of a mass movement that culminated in what the PPP terms the judicial murder of its first leader Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in 1979.
He had called for hanging Bhutto publicly and allegedly wrote a letter to the country’s powerful military to further this case. The retired air force officer has not held a significant position in politics since then.

CJ is pro-establishment and Punjab centric so nothing substantial should be expected. Majority of political/religious parties belong to Punjab who were used by our agency. Surely nothing will be initiated against PML-N leadership. Cases in NAB are also now white washed by SC which were pending against the Saints Of Our "N" League.
@Ahad & @ Saud. You please remain in the sleeping mode.For your information, Gen(R) Asad Durrani, former DG(ISI) had submitted an affidavit saying that ISI distributed 140 Million among politicians in 1990 and there are receipts for these payments.So just wait and see.In Karachi case, SC had held responsible different parties by name and asked the govt to disarm these parties but govt didn't do anything.So,who is respobsible, SC or govt?Ask Federal Govt to file a case against Musharaff under Article (6) and then see if SC takes action against him.
This is excellent news, kudos to all parties involved most importantly Asgher Khan. To dispel any doubts regarding it's seriousness Supreme court must place all suspects on the exit control list, unlike Hussein Haqqani these people are real criminals and pose serious flight risk.
Finally the SC has found some spare time to deal with cases pending for decades. Still no immediate hearing thoug. Mansoor is more imp than Asghar Khan. God has given long life to Asghar Khan otherwise the court had made sure the petition is dismissed after his passing. Perhaps other cases like M. Mai, murdered Baloch, killings by terrorists would be finally taken up by the SC.
Nawaz Shareef & qazi hussain get ready for the outcome of ur deeds. Pay back time. Justice must prevail.
Its great News. SC now should prove that its Free now....!
@nelta john "His agenda is to make way for Imran’s party the PTI..." Only a few days ago, the Supreme Court was being dubbed "the Sharif Court"...Now you are calling it pro-Imran? Bob Dylan explained this situation long ago: "something is happening, but you don't know what it is; do you Mr. Jones/ (Mr John)?"
Justice delayed is justice denied !
good job
Lets see the role of judiciary in judging the case!
I request Raza Rabani to form a committee to investigate why hearing didn't take place. Now people will see real face of Nwaz Sharif.
Court will punish nobody ! Just few days of media frenzy. They didnt punish anyone after recent gang wars of Karachi.
@ ahmed...aren't we being a little paranoid here ? doomed if you do and doomed if you don't...tsk tsk...
Thanks to Surpeme Court of Pakistan. The looters of national wealth be given exemplary punishment.
live in the past and lose sight of the future...thats whak pak is all about.
A good news. This supreme Court Chief Justice cannot be held responsible for the delay in hearing. For the last sixteen years this petition was pending in the court and during this period there have been at least six chief justices who never bothered to hear this petition.
No conclusive evidence will be found. Case will be shelved. Imran will again fail to prove any corruption of PML (N).
ISI should also be equally held accountable for this and there has to be some strict recommendations for establishment to restricting such things in future.
@Syed Imran:
Pressure from Imran Khan caused a case to be open after a decade.. Even a blind man can see that the Chief justice of Pakistan is politically motivated. His agenda is to make way for Imran's party the PTI. The truth cannot be hidden any more
Now thats what you call free courts...but please make the hearing on daily basis.
@Shahbaz Khan:
Exactly, the original PTI under Asghar Sahab could have won the elections in the late 70's but Gen Zia launched a coup instead.
They organised one of the largest rallies in Karachi and had a lot of known politicians.
We want justice! irrespective of the power of institution or popularity of a person.
Result Prediction: Conduct of ISI will be ignored. Pressure will be put on Nawaz Sharif and indirectly he will be pushed to support military establishment. After he does case will be put in cold storage indefinitely. Also the case is opened after pressure on SC for its biased and targeted cases against sitting govt.
And only Imran Khan had the guts to stand along Asghar Khan. There is a lesson here for everybody.
Calling Pakistan Tehrik-e-Istaqlal "little known" is not right. The writer is either not aware of the history of political process in Pakistan through the decades or wrote this piece very nonseriously.
