White-Washing: Obama meets Pakistan’s new face

Rehman presents official letter of recall for former Ambassador Haqqani, her letter of credentials to US President.

WASHINGTON:

Pakistan’s new ambassador to the US Sherry Rehman met with US President Barack Obama on Wednesday, who formally accepted her credentials as ambassador. In a ceremony held at the Oval Office at the White House, 15 ambassadors presented their credentials to the US President.

In the credentialing ceremony, Rehman presented the official letter of recall for former Ambassador Husain Haqqani, and her letter of credentials to the US President. She also, as part of the ceremony, presented her written remarks to President Obama, who gave a written reply to the prepared remarks.

Rehman said that as Pakistan’s representative, she would strengthen bilateral ties and set them on “firmer, transparent and equitable footing,” and sought the support of the Pakistani-American community in advancing mutual ties, a Pakistan Embassy official said. Following the meeting, Rehman also met US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
