Leicestershire Chief Executive Mike Siddall confirmed to The Express Tribune that the former Pakistan captain has been offered a 16-match contract that lasts the entire season, including Ramazan which starts in the second half of July. But Yousuf, who last played for Pakistan almost 15 months ago, wants to fast for the entire month and is hoping that the county will allow him to skip four matches that fall in that period.
“I have the contract with me and it just needs my signature to confirm everything,” Yousuf, out on a four-month religious gathering, told The Express Tribune. “I’ve been contracted for the four-day format as that’s the only format I want to play in. However, I’ve asked them to give me a month off for Ramazan and I will only sign the contract if I’m allowed to take that break.”
Yousuf has played 90 Tests and 288 One-Day Internationals for Pakistan, scoring 7,530 and 9,720 runs respectively. He also holds the record of scoring most Test runs in a calendar year (1,788 in 2006). This will be the batsman’s maiden stint with Leicestershire, having previously played for Lancashire (2008) and Warwickshire (2011).
Leicestershire, meanwhile, will make a decision on the batsman by the end of the week, according to Siddall.
“We only became aware of this situation earlier this week,” he said. “He’ll miss four of the 16 championship matches and that’s something that we’ll sit down and look at. He’s missing 25% of the team’s matches and that can be crucial. However, if he scores 1,200 odd runs in the other 12 matches then you could argue against that.”

great love you May Allah give you place in Jannah
@Leave Him Alone: Yea but you won't see orthodox jews playing professional sport and asking the administration for a special treatment/break during sabbath, but i digress...
as a club cricketer in herts league, in ramadan keeping a fast and playing 50 over game is really hard. i stand in slips all day and when it come to batting i take one where there is 2 runs. no big shot at all. i reckon yousaf wont be able to do it while fasting at county level
I am surprised at the criticism this is getting from some friends.....for heavens sake Yousuf is "negotiating" a contract and he has a right to put his terms forward, whatever basis they may have (personal, religious, monetary etc.) no matter how "strange" they may appear to others, ....it is up to the two parties to decide whether the terms are justifiable or not....if this is not acceptable to the club, they will not sign him up....its simple.....and by the way, one should not be so quick to criticize the religion.....I am sure you know that orthodox Jews do not "work" during Sabbath which is every weekend from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon......but it goes "unnoticed" because they own their religion and practice it from their hearts.....just a thought !
Maulana sahib, why play a sport that is in contrast to your religion? Go preach and earn your livelihood or something! Just because you're a practicing muslim doesn't mean you're anything special. Thanks!
if his earnings (cricket) is such that he cannot keep fasts then.. he should not fast in ramadan and keep them later.
@ sars: well you can work in ramzan but not at the cost of skipping your fasts. i mean you can skip fasts only in extreme cases such as sickness/travelling etc. plus its not a matter of life or death for him. we shud appreciate the fact that hes upholding the principles of our religion. i dnot think anyone one can play 4-day match while fasting :)
Imagine. All employees in an organization take the whole month off because its ramadan. Yousaf is/will be an employee of that club, he has no right to take whole month off. He should stop using religion for his own convenience.
how about you actually do the work you are getting paid for and dont ask for leniency in everything.Where is it written that you shouldnt work in ramazan???
this is great news for me yousuf bhai is my all time favourite batsmen i pray for yousuf bhai
