Two Turkish companies will start work in collaboration with the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) by February 20, Waseem Ajmal, the LWMC managing director said on Tuesday.
The companies, he said, would send 60 machines along with their own supervisors in the second week of February.
The machines include mini-dumpers, various types of mechanical sweepers and washing vehicles. These will help clean, sweep and collect garbage door-to-door in 26 union councils of Lahore. Ajmal said the Turkish experts will also train LWMC workers.
The LWMC has divided Lahore into two zones. The project will be implemented in each zone in four phases. The first phase in zone-1, will begin on February 20 and last for four months.
LWMC Communications Manager Memoona Arslan Bhatti told The Express Tribune that replicating the Turkish model of a clean city was not easy. The door-to-door garbage collection, she said, will put an end to the problem of empty plots being turned into dump sites. The residents will be charged between Rs25 and Rs100, she added.
She said there will be no charges in the first four months. Garbage bag will also be provided for Rs2 each, she said.
She said garbage cans will be placed underground and only machines will be able to lift garbage out of them.
According to an LWMC estimate, Lahore produces 6,500 tons of garbage everyday, of which 5,000 tons is picked up by LWMC. The LWMC also plans to set up a project for producing electricity from garbage, she added.
Plants for production of electricity would be installed at Lakhodair, where the LWMC has acquired 160 acres of land that will be turned into a land fill site. Garbage recycling plants would also be installed soon, she said.
After the arrival of the new machinery, the old machinery in the LWMC use will be sold through an auction.

A lot of self defeating criticism is mostly what I see in these posts. Also not one bit of thanks, praise or gratitude to the Turks offering this help. Such a shame you are so absorbed in your negativity that some of you missed the whole point of this story. City getting cleaned up and a friend helping you and offering gifts for the job.
@usman: I'm sure you have never seen Karachi and compared it to the rest of Sindh, do so cause that will make you feel much more satisfied.
@Beatle, what about http://tribune.com.pk/story/319598/discrimination-multan-gets-lions-share-in-funds-for-south-punjab/ ? This is why @More provinces commented "So now we would need a Southern South Punjab province too :)"
@usman, I think lets wait and hope that this becomes successful and then even Faislabad, Rawalpindi or any other city in the country can make use of it inshaallah.
@Sane: i am not pessimistic, my only concern is why lahore? even if it is a pilot project, it can be started in any other big city, like Faisalabad or Rawalpindi...
I cant believe that people have problems with even development work, this is actually sad. When was the last time you heard any sort of development happening anywhere in the rest of the country. Just have a look at the ET website, this might be the only such news related to Pakistan and you guys are criticizing him for that. Good work my fellow country men
garbage cleaning is all we can do !!!!
even for that we need expertise????????????? ...
all this talk about "bahut talent hai" is not even worth CRAP.
@Usman. C'mon Sir, give a cheers fror doing something which is earnestly needd in Cap City Lahore,Good Job CM.
@Sane: Its not only the waste management. 80% of the funds allocated for southern Punjab are diverted solely to Lahore City. Do you think that non-Lahoris are second class citizens? Shareef(???) Bros will have have to pay the price very soon.
@usman, FYI!!! lahore is the capital of punjab. Why are we always pessimistic ? If the waste management collaboration is successful, it can be applied to other cities.
Shahbaz Sharif, FYI!!! lahore is not the only city in punjab
So living on gifts and aid
I great initiative to help improve Lahore and bring it up to par with other world cities. Every time I travel to Lahore, I am pleased to see the improvements which all city residents speak of with pride. However, I hope the local population embraces the keep Lahore clean initiative with all of tis passion. No one should rely solely on a government agency to keep Lahore beautiful. Every resident should do his or her own duty in maintaining the city as the gem it is.
