Threat to democracy only from government's incompetence, corruption: Ch Nisar
Says the resolution put forth in the National Assembly only sought protection for a few leaders.
ISLAMABAD:
Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said on Monday that the only threat the government faced was from its attitude, performance, incompetence and corruption.
Speaking outside the Lower House after leading a walkout, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader said that if democracy faced a threat, it could not be strengthened by speeches or by moving a resolution in the Parliament.
Nisar said that to strengthen democracy the government needed to solve the issues of the people and uphold the Constitution and rule of law.
He said that over the past four years, the government had only sought protection for its leaders, personalities and ideologies.
Speaking of the resolution passed in the Parliament, he said that the resolution only served to protect a few people from the law and hide their incompetence, and crime.
The Leader of the Opposition criticised the government for creating a false sense of clash of institutions.
Nisar said that the Opposition had always favoured reconciliation to strengthen democracy in the country and had worked to resolve issues through consensus.
He said that the PML-N would only bring No-Confidence Motion against the Prime Minister in the House, only if it gets required number members for the purpose.
The PML-N leader proposed amendments in the resolution moved by the treasury benches for strengthening of democratic institutions, he said the amendments were aimed at strengthening democratic process in the country and solving people's problems.
Khan said the Supreme Court decisions should be respected and added that their amendments were in accordance with law and democratic process. Chaudhry Nisar said that people were suffering from lack of electricity, and gas among other problems.
