MANCHESTER: Sir Alex Ferguson backed Paul Scholes to prove the critics wrong after the veteran midfielder celebrated his return from retirement with a goal in Manchester United’s 3-0 Premier League win over Bolton.

Starting a game for the first time in eight months, the 37-year-old showed what his side has been missing during a recent run, which saw them lose to Blackburn and Newcastle on their last two league outings.

But his 45th-minute opening goal – the 103rd of his league career – was a well-timed reminder of Scholes’ ability after some critics questioned Ferguson’s decision to bring him out of retirement.

“He has that instinct for goals that he’s had since he was a kid,” said Ferguson. “And he did it again. He popped up when he should’ve been enjoying it, sitting in central midfield controlling things.

“He’s been one of the greatest ever United players. There has been negative stuff said about him this week but when you see that performance, see that quality, you don’t lose that.”

Danny Welbeck and Michael Carrick scored second-half goals, which ensured a comfortable afternoon for United.

‘Torres on road to recovery’

Meanwhile, Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas is convinced Fernando Torres is nearing a return to his best despite the striker’s continuing problems in front of goal. Torres once again drew a blank in the 1-0 victory over Sunderland but did set up Frank Lampard’s winner with a spectacular volley.

“The performance was good,” said Villa-Boas. “He’s finding inspiration, motivation, form. It’s good to see he’s picking up confidence, assisting people. He hasn’t been scoring but he’s getting nearer every time and I think it’s for the benefit of the team.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish believes a lack of imagination is the reason for his team’s miserable home run. The Reds have drawn seven of their home games, managing just four victories, with another goal-less draw against Stoke.

In other matches, Tottenham drew 1-1 with Wolves, while Blackburn trounced Fulham 3-1. Aston Villa drew 1-1 with Everton, while Norwich beat West Brom 2-1.
