WASHINGTON: Agents with Israel’s Mossad agency posed as American CIA agents in operations to recruit members of the militant group Jundallah, a report in Foreign Policy magazine said Friday.

Using American dollars and US passports, the agents passed themselves off as members of the Central Intelligence Agency in the operations, notably in London, according to memos from 2007 and 2008, said the report.

Jundallah (Soldiers of God) says it is fighting for the interests of the southeastern province’s large ethnic Baloch community, whose members mainly follow the Sunni branch.

The Baloch straddle the border with neighboring Pakistan and Afghanistan and Jundallah militants have taken advantage of the unrest in the region to find safe haven in the border region.

In July it claimed responsibility for attacking the Grand Mosque in the provincial capital Zahedan, reportedly targeting members of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards Corps, killing 28 people.

“It’s amazing what the Israelis thought they could get away with,” a US intelligence officer told Foreign Policy.

“Their recruitment activities were nearly in the open. They apparently didn’t give a damn what we thought,” said the official.

The memos were written during the last years of then-president George W Bush’s administration – the former US leader Bush “went absolutely ballistic” when briefed on the memos, said the magazine.

“The report sparked White House concerns that Israel’s program was putting Americans at risk,” an officer told the magazine.

“There’s no question that the US has cooperated with Israel in intelligence-gathering operations against the Iranians, but this was different. No matter what anyone thinks, we’re not in the business of assassinating Iranian officials or killing Iranian civilians,” said the official.

The Mossad activities could further jeopardize the already tense relationship of the United States with Pakistan, which is an official ally in the fight against al Qaeda, which had been pressed to take action against Jundallah, said Foreign Policy.

Tensions in the US-Iran relationship have also spiked, most recently following the assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist. Foreign Policy said there was no evidence of a link between the scientist’s killing and Jundallah.

Well this is not new – we always knew that the CIA/MOSSAD are the same thing – a one organisation working for the longevity of the Zionist state. The Pakistanis need to be aware of this and take charge of the situation – kill any American spy still operating in Pakistan, there are many. There are many American or CIA/MOSSAD spies operating in Pakistan and have married local women to give them a good cover. It is about time that the Pakistani public took action and eleminated this foreign threat by naming those Pakistani women that are married and thus harbouring foreign spies in their loins.

PAK and ISI must take severe actions against them, sorry to say that the rights movement going on in Balochistan is just the movement to ensure a state inside a state .

Mossad is conducting war aginst iran, not pakistan.
I very much doubt whether israelis are even remotely bothered about pakistan, even if it is true they wouldnt spend more than 2 minutes thinking about pakistan.
But the entire pakistani state and society is totally obsessed with israel and accuse them for every small misfortune in a very paranoid manner that is unique to pakistan.

Interesting bit. On the flip side, I think growing concerns in American leadership over this identity sabotage is a positive development.

Israel is surrounded by hostile neighbours. If it started a conflict in Iran, the Hezbollah and other sleeper cells loyal to Iran would carry out attacks on Israel. The Mossad had made clumsy mistakes in the past and should stop provoke an escalation of the already tensed relations.

Has anyone bothered to read the Foreign Policy article by Mark Perry, or just going to remain ignorant of the nuances and make false biased assumptions?

The US are angry about Israeli agents posing as CIA agents approaching Jundullah (an anti-Iran/Shia Baloch Sunni nationalist extremist group), as revealed in their memos.

Seymour Hersh years earlier reported that the US were using Jundullah in Pak against Iran which the US had always denied.

The BBC reported of Iran Kurdish rebels being backed by the Bush admin which had okayed black ops against Iran. Most experts agreed this was true. The Jundullah claim in contrast, however, was harder to accept, considering they were within Pak having ties to Al Qaeda, Taliban and local Pak militant groups such as Baloch nationalists and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. So for US to even consider giving resources to Jundullah would be incomprehensible as it could come back to haunt them in Afghanistan.

The Israeli connection actually makes sense out of it, as far as the covert war against Iran is concerned and why Jundullah is being used by them. There’d be little consequence for Israel if such info or resources were not used against Iran or misused. If there was blowback, the US troops in Afghanistan or the Pak troops in Pak would be the ones most likely to take the brunt, not Israel.

This does not prove, however, that L-e-J, L-e-T, TTP, Taliban, Haqqani network, etc. are all mindless extremist zombies who are doing the bidding of CIA/RAW/MOSSAD/Martian masters.

Probably closer to the truth implicating Saudi Intelligence and the ISI as their originators and masters than any other foreign agencies. Most cases they have their own ideological goals.

Jundullah and their radical agenda, existed even before their Mossad deal.

Iran dared to suspect Pak intelligence of harboring Jundullah at one point, simply because of ISI’s own notorious role in employing militants as strategic assets.

Pakistan needs to get its own house in order. When the state is weak and becomes overly dependent on foreign aid, then you will have this sort of activity. Also, Pakistan needs to have a reconciliation with the unhappy Baloch, and have a genuine dialogue with them. If this is not done soon, then there will be others who will jump in and will take advantage of the situation.

Let us also remember that the Mossad used fake Australian Passports in different operations some years ago.

Having said all these, if I were a PM of Israel and if I hear the Iranian President speaking about wiping Israel of off the map I would not hesitate to send in Mossad agents to annul Iranian operations.

This is the what happens if a neighbor country does not play by the international rules and go in for covert war. All bets are off and it is a cat and mouse game.

Iranians should realize that Israel is not going away anywhere and should shed the religious ideological hatred and follow the statesmanship of Anwar Sadat of Egypt.

    Read this carefully everyone:

Notably in London? Where else did the meetings and supply of arms and training take place? Did it take place on Pakistani soil? No wonder Musharraf wants diplomatic ties with Israel.

    @KMR Overseas:
I just love to see the word RAW added in most of the comments to an article that clearly has no such mention – shows how formulaic these conspiracy theories people have become. A piece of worthless advice – read such news items to stay informed, not as a template to base your view of the world on. An interesting factor here is that the Jundullah are willing to be recruited by CIA but not by Mossad – seems a bit nitpicky don’t you think?Recommend

So much security breech under this leadership. All kind of bloody activities inside its borders from ouside spy agencies running loose. At a critical time when Military rule was keeping the country safe and clean. . . . one must wonder why Pakistan was pressurised for this weak democracy at any cost!

  • Jan 15, 2012 - 11:40PM

I see the logically challenged deluded conservatives, conspiracy theorists and regressive denialists still can’t seem to grasp the small facts and reality (the attack was on Iran, not on Pak soil, and Jundullah for the longest time was known to be operating in Pak before any Mossad involvement).

Despite the plain evidence and proof and the reasoning (CIA not happy with what MOSSAD did), it all goes over their head, their ultimate excuse, self censorship (Pak soil, Pak militant groups), prejudice and leaps in logic continues where everything is a paranoid foreign conspiracy (throwing in RAW for good measure, when there’s no evidence or mention, but that won’t stop the ultimate boogeyman delusion!) with no local culpability, excusing (or sympathizing) any extremist or criminal Pakistani involvement (of which there is so so many!).

If there was a report of Martians and Djinns being involved, they would desperately grab onto that. Ok, maybe just Martians…Djinns they would vehemently defend as pro-Pakistani…! Just too strong religious superstition to think otherwise!
