Police inspector caught leaving a corpse in another station’s limits

KARACHI: A police inspector and a volunteer of a welfare organisation were taken into custody on Wednesday after they left a corpse in an area falling under another police station’s jurisdiction.

The body of a young man was found near Khayaban-e-Tauheed, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Korangi Industrial Area police. The on-duty police inspector of the Korangi Industrial Area, ASI Idrees, was assigned to bring the body to the hospital.

A straight out case ended up involving another police station as Idrees, reportedly aided by an ambulance driver, was caught by the Gizri police as they tried to leave the body within the limits of the former’s police station.

The police inspector’s alleged accomplice has been identified as Adnan Khan, a member of a welfare organisation and a father to two young children. He was allegedly bribed Rs150 by the inspector to leave the body in the Gizri police station’s limits.Khan has reportedly admitted to the crime, but defended himself by saying that he acted on the inspector’s instructions.

According to Khan, he was approached by ASI Idrees at the hospital who asked him to dump the corpse in the Gizri area.

“Saheb (the ASI) said that this is not in our jurisdiction so take the body to the other area. I did what he told me to. There was no talk about money,” Khan said, as he stood eating niswar confidently in the police holding cell.

Khan told The Express Tribune that this was a mistake and he didn’t intend to leave the body elsewhere. He said he had recently been employed as an ambulance driver and earned Rs8,000 monthly.

ASI Idrees also admitted to the crime and said that he was “ashamed of his act”. He also claimed that he paid Khan Rs150 to help him.

“The Korangi Industrial Area has jurisdiction on one side of a nullah, the other side is Gizri’s,” said Gizri SHO Chaudhry Shahid. “They were caught leaving the body in the Korangi police station’s area.”

SHO Korangi Industrial Area Amjad Kiyani refused to comment. He said that the Korangi police was looking into the issue and he would not be able to comment until the investigation was finalised.

Idrees claims that he acted on his own and senior police officials at the station were not involved. The motive, according to the police, is simple enough. Police stations leave corpses elsewhere so it won’t impact their station’s record.

“This happens on the level of police stations to show a low crime late. But in this case the ASI did this to save his own job because he was the on-duty inspector.”

Police officials at Korangi Industrial Area said that while the case would have been in their jurisdiction, it was found at least 15 to 20 feet away.

Several police stations in Karachi have disputes over jurisdictions. Last October, the Pak Colony and Shershah police clashed on the issue after SHO Shehrshah Shahid Jabbar complained that the SHO of the Pak Colony police station, Abdul Moiz, had left a corpse in the Shershah police limits. That dispute was resolved after senior officials intervened.

FIR No. 11/12 under Section 297 of the Pakistan Penal Code was registered at the Gizri police station against the suspects.

As for the body in question, it was later taken to JPMC for a post mortem. The deceased has been identified as Sakhawat Hussain. Hussain lived in Qayyumabad and police officials suspect that he was been killed over personal enmity.
