ISLAMABAD: Federal Education Minister Sardar Assef Ahmad Ali has said that the National Assembly standing committee on education cannot order the verification of education degrees.

He expressed these views while talking to journalists after the oath-taking ceremony of the officer-bearers of a teachers association at the Federal Board. He said the Higher Education Commission (HEC) was under the education ministry, which releases its budget.

Ali said that on receipt of a report of degrees verification, he was not bound to provide it to the National Assembly standing committee on education.

The Higher Education Commission had embarked on the degree verification process on the directions of the standing committee for which it was not authorised to issue under subsection 4 of rules 201 of the Constitution, he said.

Has the HEC taken the prime minister into confidence in this regard, he questioned, adding that the HEC was not a constitutional body like the Election Commission. Hence it was transgressing its powers but the ministry would not allow it.

The minister alleged that status of the HEC chairman was not equivalent to a federal minister, adding that if this was the case he should come forward and respond to questions in the Senate.

He held that the education ministry had not constituted any committee for verification of degrees.
