ISLAMABAD: Two inspectors of the capital police were dismissed from service for taking heavy bribes from Nato contractors for allowing unauthorised parking of Nato trucks in the outskirts of the federal capital.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Operations) Bani Amin dismissed Inspector Rana Allah Bux and Inspector Shah Nawaz of Tarnol police station following a departmental inquiry ordered by Rehman Malik.

The inquiry conducted by both DSP Jamil Hashmi and SP Saddar Capt (R) Liaqut Ali Khan found the two inspectors guilty of taking bribes for unauthorised allocation of an empty plot to be used as a parking lot for Nato tankers.

The former inspector Allah Bux had struck a deal with the Nato contractor, Shakeel, for taking bribes worth Rs20,000 per truck for using the empty plot as a parking lot.

Later Shah Nawaz, his replacement, continued with the deal. On June 8, the day the incident took place, Inspector Nawaz had gone to the contractor for the remaining instalment of the promised money.

When the attack started, Inspector Nawaz was with the contractor, waiting for the
remaining amount of the bribe.

The contractor asked the inspector for more time to make the remaining payment since the attack on the trucks was underway.

The SHO, however, insisted that “such firing incidents are a routine and should not halt the contractor from paying him the full amount”.

The two police inspectors had been given two weeks time to clarify their position. They failed to defend themselves against the allegations levelled in the inquiry report. Later they confessed to their crime.

DIG (Operations) Bani Amin then issued orders for their dismissal from police service. The DIG said: “People who prefer money over public safety should not be allowed to work in the police department.”

The supply trucks parked near Dhok Paracha, in the outskirts of Islamabad, came under militant attack on June 8. At least seven people were killed and five others were injured, while over a hundred trucks and tankers were set alight by the militants.
