Balochistan’s Berlin Wall

Letter January 07, 2012
Policy of kidnapping, killing activists or members of nationalist parties or teachers should be immediately stopped.

KARACHI: With reference to Dr Pervez Tahir’s article of January 6 titled “Balochistan’s Berlin Wall”, the reality is that the civilian government has no say in how the province is administered. Dr Tahir should have at least recognised this fact because had he done that, he would have addressed his concerns, not to the government but to the military establishment which is in charge of the situation.

As for what needs to be done to improve the situation, that is quite straightforward. The policy of kidnapping and killing activists or members of nationalist parties or teachers and professors should be immediately disbanded. If this is being done by rogue elements then they should be prosecuted and punished.

As for ownership of minerals and royalties, the province should get its due share. This should be channelled at the local level and should not be paid to local sardars, which is the case currently. Furthermore, the Balochistan government needs to assert itself against the rising sectarian monster within the province. Two massacres targeting the Hazara community took place last year and those involved in these heinous acts have yet to be arrested.
