Naved bowls Hurricanes to 4th successive win

Adjudged man of the match in Big Bash clash against Sydney Thunders.

A match-winning show by fast-bowler Rana Naved, ensured that Hobart Hurricanes won their fourth successive match at the Big Bash League, outplaying Sydney Thunders by five wickets.

The victory ensured that the Hurricanes are top of the points table with eight points, while Thunders are placed second.

Electing to bat first, Thunders were well-placed at 114 for three courtesy a typically aggressive knock by Chris Gayle, who scored a 33-ball 53, with the help of two fours and five maximums. He was well-supported by Sean Abbott, who made a run-a-ball 39.

However, none of the other batsmen in the line-up were able to give a good account of themselves as Naved, who was declared man of the match, continued his good form in the competition and finished with figures of three for 22 courtesy some fine bowling at the death as Thunders were restricted to 138 for eight.

Naved got good support from Jason Krejza, who picked up two for 29, while all the other bowlers also chipped in with useful contributions.

In reply, the Hurricanes lost opener Phil Jacques early, but solid contributions from Jonathan Wells (29), Travis Birt (35) and Owais Shah (41*) ensured that the hosts cantered to their target in the penultimate over. Shah’s 32-ball knock included five hits to the fence as the Englishman carried the innings along admirably.

Fidel Edwards and Scott Coyote picked up two wickets each for the Thunders but were not able to prevent the Hurricanes from notching up yet another well-deserved win.
