So much is at stake in the coming state elections, especially in the UP with a population of 175 million and 403 seats. The state is about the same size as Pakistan and traditionally a breeding ground for the country’s prime ministers.
Both Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, apparently heirs to the Congress and Samajwadi parties respectively, have thrown their hats in this ring. Young Rahul has come a long, long way since his last UP campaign five years ago, when in his anglicised Hindi, he metaphorically beat his chest and spoke of how his ‘daadi’, Indira Gandhi, had been responsible for the break-up of Pakistan. (His audience was scandalised at the young man’s immaturity and Rahul was widely panned in the press.)
Of course, the Congress party was then soundly thrashed at the hustings for a variety of reasons (it won 22 seats). The first was that Dalit leader Mayawati had brilliantly stitched together this umbrella coalition of castes, ranging from upper-caste Brahmins to those beyond the pale. Also, the Dalits in the state, much like the rest of India, still vote along primeval caste lines.
Much has changed today, to the extent that the Samajwadi Party could even unseat Mayawati with a little bit of help from Rahul’s Congress. If that happens, the complexion of politics at the centre will change beyond belief. And this is when the story really becomes interesting.
Unfortunately, the alphabet soup of UP politics seems beyond the understanding and interest of most of Pakistan. When journalists from newspapers with unpronounceable names and languages the world over, can take crash courses in the mind-boggling permutations and combinations of Indian politics, it’s shocking that no Pakistani journalist covers India properly.
The reasons are not far to see, as a Track Two conversation between the Delhi-based Centre for Dialogue and Reconciliation and Pakistan’s Jinnah Institute, discussed recently. Both countries allows only two journalists each to live in one another’s territories and in Pakistan’s case, even those vacancies have not been filled up. Moreover, visas for journalists are more difficult than unravelling Midas’ gold.
The problem with the India-Pakistan relationship is that it is totally monochromatic. Terrorism in general and, the Mumbai attacks in particular, has scarred the Indian psyche so badly that the terror and extremism within Pakistan makes most Indians react with the equivalent of ‘serves you right’.
The fact is, we hardly know each other, nor do we look beyond the stereotype. President Asif Zardari’s tense relations with the Pakistan Army as well as Yousaf Raza Gilani being critical of the military are, therefore, extremely fascinating comments on the fast-moving situation inside Pakistan.
May you live in interesting times, goes an old Chinese proverb. The subcontinent seems chained to that statement.

Then what all the Indians are doing in Pakistani blog.. I have never visited Indian blog.
on the contrary, if you search internet trends or real life, except for a group of Indians who are interested to know the enemy state, No Indians in general are interested in Pakistan or it's politics. I know, this statement will be taken as a banter by the nationalists here. but, the truth is this. We are aware that Pakistan is in middle east and racially has nothing common with India. not competing that. You said, You are interested in USA and europe. Check with the Indians there. Indians keep away from Pakistani or Bangladeshi Ghettos in countries like Britain. Elephant will not care for the small creatures near to it, it is the small creatures who are dumbstruck by Elephant(in a non offensive way). Good Morning!
[BLOCKQUOTE}Unfortunately, it seems that Indians are obsessed with all things Pakistanis but the reverse is not true for the majority of Pakistanis. And yes, the names, customs and places of India are largely unintelligible to a young generation of Pakistanis.[/BLOCKQUOTE]
Perhaps the writer fails to understand that only a small group of Pakistanis- that too mostly in Karachi- have an interest in what goes on in India since they have family there. Most native Pakistanis, myself included do not follow events in India beyond what is happening in occupied Kashmir. By and large, India is as alien to us as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh or Burma. We care about Europe and North America because it is relevant to our families there. Unfortunately, it seems that Indians are obsessed with all things Pakistanis but the reverse is not true for the majority of Pakistanis. And yes, the names, customs and places of India are largely unintelligible to a young generation of Pakistanis.
@Adil: When a national sportsman like Afridi has the rotten attitude to say on national TV after being taken in IPL 1 - "Hinduon ki zaat hi aisi hai". It says a heck a lot about the collective psyche of the people he represents. And just out of curiousity - Would you invite the man from a country whose people did Mumbai 7/11 to play cricket in your country and make money out of it??
@Adil: "So why would any Pakistani,with so much other things to bother about pay any attention towards what’s happening in India given the attitude explained above." - Exactly for the biased and one sided opinion people like you take up.. Please do mind to read other articles on TOI. And editing/censorship is not that good a thing in democracy because that is exactly what people in power make use of to defend their misdeeds.. Anyways, so much details about India (albeit biased). So, why do you actually pay attention to India??
With due respect to the Columnist,I don't know if the same article by Jyoti Malhotra will get published in Indian newspaper. I personally have witnessed Times of India not letting my comment gettting posted a number of times on issues such as Veena Malik,OBL etc...despite me not using a single abusive word. Even on Shoaib Akhtar's statements about Sachin Tendulkar,Indian media acted as if Akhtar commited some sort of a blasphemy or insulted their nation, and seemed like the Pakistani sports legend is about to get declared as Public Enemy#1 over there.I tried to give my comment in a civilized way on TOI requesting others not to turn it into some Indo-Pak fight and stop treating sports icon as immortals or Gods. BUT, still it was not posted and it often looks as if TOI thrives on hatred and misunderstandings. In August this year,they published an article about Pakistanis in Norway and the fact that they outnumber Indians in the Scandinavian country, plus how the incidents in Oslo surprisingly didn't have anyone from Pakistan as the suspect. The article was nothing but a source of Pakistanphobia telling that the increasing number of Pakistanis anywhere in the world could be a death warrant against successful Indians. Plus, the way abusive comments never get filtered on Indian news websites, gives a pleasant picture about the standards of Indian media outlets and their ethical health. The Pakistani trio gets sentenced in November on charges of spot fixing,and many newspapers cover the story. But no headline sounded hateful as the one used by Headlines Today (an Indian channel). It said 'Pakistan shames cricket', yeah the entire nation was blamed for the fault of just three. How Indian media attacked Shahid Afridi and used his statements to generate hatred is not something worth repeating. Even mocking and targetting Islam is a favourite habit of many readers there. One may argue that (Late) M.F. Hussain offended a section of society but after his death I witnessed hateful comments against Islam and Prophet Mohammed (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him) at TOI, Bhagvad Gita got banned and Russia and out of nowhere there were comments abusing The Holy Quran calling it a source of terrorism that needs to get banned actually. And TOI did publish it, possibly thinking that it may generate more traffic towards their website. So why would any Pakistani,with so much other things to bother about pay any attention towards what's happening in India given the attitude explained above.
Why should Pakistanis try and get to know more about India? The lesser the look eastwards, the better it is.
@Romm: I don't disagree with you about the self created mania part. I just explained the reason behind that mania. We actually had a plague in Surat a few years ago when many people died. A lot of good things came out of it in terms of hygiene awareness among people and Surat is now one of the cleanest places in India. I don't know if ISI was involved in that and I don't remember any one pointing the finger at ISI for the plague but if they were involved, they did a good deed. Surat is clean because of ISI, that is, if ISI is involved in the plague spreading business. I personally don't think so since plague does not respect borders or the LOC or whatever and the ISI, being good, respectable and "clean" family men, wouldn't want that plague to reach their HQ, their officers and their family members.
@Indian: Listen to me you goof-ball, you indians seriously never come up with a better argument. India has more poor people than the whole of the african continent...feel better about your population now??
@Jyoti Malhotra
Its wonderful to read your articles and i have been a fan of yours since you used to write in indian express and outlook. I think pakistanis in general are also interested in Indian politics, somehow with private tv in Pakistan we have become so islamabad centric lately. Isnt it interesting like present UP the whole of present Pakistan is about 175m and our assembly as well as the media has the same amount of corrupt elements.Just like Mayawati wanting to break up UP into 4 provinces to maintain her power similarly here we are planning to break Punjab, KP not to let PMLn gain power .
@Rajx Good, Funny and Sarcastic once again. As already Described, Indians are the Victim of their self Created Pakistan Mania. Even if their Is outbreak of Plague in India due to poor Hygienic conditions, ISI and Lashkar-e-Tayyaba will be blamed. So, we are not bothered whether, exchange of Journalists takes place or blocked. We just Chill, come What may, Lol.........
@Imran: Funnily enough you deny caring about India while thinking about the two most famous and are the most representative things about India.. - 'bollywood movies and Indian cricket'.. Funny.. Please continue not caring about India..
Indian elections are not relevant to us. Our dealings are with elected governments. India is afraid of us (just as USA, NATO, Europe etc etc are) because of our nuclear might. We are not afraid of India, hence we dont have to dwell our thoughts to it.
Ashok Sai, U sound Frustrated in the same Way, I spoke about at the Beginning. lol....... I have started enjoying sarcastic comments from Indians without substance and Reason..
Even I don't care about bollywood movies and Indian cricket(only when India looses I see the scorecard) .... Indian politics,,,why should I care?
S. Mukherji:
Maybe you should start caring for the 836 million Indians that earn less than 20 rupees a day before you start caring about Pakistan.
@ Author
What is the use of telling about Indian elections and democracy to the people who wanted to be ruled by a dictator and still believe their military is the only sacred institution capable of (actually the other way around) protecting them ???
Why have we reacted negatively to her point? Her point is that we don't know each other well. Apart from paltry exchanges of diplomats and relatives crossing the border to meet each other there is no true viable connection between the two neighbors. If we are to become good neighbors we better know each other politically, culturally, and economically. By the way, Indians too have a very poor understanding of Pakistan, and perhaps due to the prevailing environment, both countries find it convenient to just ignore each other.
Jp: Yeah UP is less than 1/3rd the size of Pakistan. Not that it makes much of a difference. Land area will only get you so far.
I wonder whether we have academics in Pakistan who specialize in studying India? Professional India watchers.
Speaking as an Indian, I find Pakistani politics infinitely more interesting than Indian. How many of us in Bombay care about the dull goings-on in UP, when we have the extraordinary spectacle of watching a nation, just across our borders, unravelling before our very eyes? There is not a spectacle in the world to compare with it – this great volcano, roiling and moiling on the brink of explosion. And you would have us wade through election analyses of Mayawati’s chances!
She has given the figures wrongly. Actually UP is not larger in size with Pakistan but population wise it is larger. UP's population is 190 million while Pakistan's population is only 180 million. Regarding her version of Pakistan's media not covering Indian elections & politics they have their own hands full with conspiracy theories
The only thing that pakistanis are interested in India is Indian movies. Nobody cares about politics in India or such other affairs, and by the way why should we??? both countries are mired in their own problems, India is 135th (despite its shining for the last ten years) in Human Development Index while Pakistan is 145th ( despite the Taliban factor and much more). So do some soul searching.
@sadhu
Pakistani media and journalists are giving huge coverage to Balochistan issue, documentaries criticizing agencies and army and interviews of separatists’ militant like brahamdag bugti and others have been telecasted from almost all private TV channels.
And for your information most of the main stream media in Pakistan are either Karachi or Islamabad based :)
Your hatred for Pakistan mixed with your ignorance makes you Indian post funny things :)
@Pro Bono Publico: What has that got to do with the point Ms Malhotra is making? Are all you guys so blind sided as far as India is concerned?
It is good that Pakistani press is not paying attention to politics in India. As many pointed out they need not to. Also it is very surprising that you are trying to bat for Rahul and Akhilesh here, probably if you would write this in an Indian newspaper people will laugh.
Can someone please tell me any reason why Indians should be concerned about Pakistan or Pakistanis concerned about India"?
@Romm: Thanks if you do not bother us or bother about us. Great. We shall be much better for that.
@Indian: and still you're obsessed with us! Shows the affect we have on you, however small the size!
Jiye Pakistan! : )
@Indian
France, Germony, Holland, South Korea, italy are even smaller (both area and population wise) then Pakistan, should a Pakistani be proud of this :)
Mr. Indian when will you guys grow up (mentally) !
"The state is about the same size as Pakistan" - I hope all Pakistanis read that sentence, one Indian state is the size of Pakistan.. One state! and there are 28 states and 7 Union territories in India..
Oh good for them we got our own infinite problems to worry about.
@Jyoti Malhotra
Pakistan and India are completely two separate nations with their own priorities and goals. Pakistanis are not obsessed with India as such; we don’t care what’s going on in India. Other then bollywood movies and cricket no body in Pakistan is interested on Indian affairs.
Yes Indian media seems to be paranoid with Pakistan's internal affairs. Each and every bit of news in Pakistan makes its place in Indian TV channels and news papers. I don’t understand how come a much larger country and world's 'emerging power' is so much obsessed with her smaller neighbour!!??
Shocking? Contrary to what Indians like to believe, Pakistanis have very little interest in India and Indians.
Good article. I fear India is making the same mistake as US made after 09/11, and that is looking at the world through the vignette of horrible deeds of terrorists. It is not good for India in the long run because it will have a blow-back effect in terms of widening trust deficit between other communities and Indian Muslims. On our side, we need to do more to help India in catching the perpetrators responsible for crimes of humanity and bringing them to justice.
More things change they remain the same.That's all there is about Pak-Indi relationship.
"Both countries allows only two journalists each to live in one another’s territories and in Pakistan’s case, even those vacancies have not been filled up." Even Pakistan could not come up with a journalist/apologist for itself in India better than this author. You fill up the bill for two of them quite well, Madam. "...unravelling Midas’ gold." How does one unravel gold, Midas' or the one in Fort Knox? "Terrorism in general and, the Mumbai attacks in particular, has scarred the Indian psyche so badly that the terror and extremism within Pakistan makes most Indians react with the equivalent of ‘serves you right’." Most of the world says that: "serves you right". No one's psyche is scarred, least of that of Indians. We have handled it pretty well but that would not suit your purpose, Ms Malhotra, would it now? You are above us all humble, meek, terrified Indians.
Does the Indian press covers the genocide in Indian Occupied Kashmir? Does the Indian press question the morality of occupying Kashmir in defiance of the UN? Does the Indian press question the mass graves in Kashmir?
Ms Malhotra, I often read your article with the hope that you could write something realistic and positive about Pakistan. I won't blame you for this because It's Normal Indian mindset developed after years of Pakistan centric and ISI phobic political drive by Indian Media and weak Security establishment. Your observation that Pakistani Journalists do not cover India should be a kind of learning for you that how pushed we are about Indians. On the other hand, we see that most of the Indian media Anchors are heard rattling against Pakistan. May it be India 24/7 or Zee News, u will find them mourning Pakistan. The Complaint against Pakistani Journalists that they do not adequately cover India, you are unknowingly, speaking Indian Frustration, that why Pakistanis do not discuss India despite continuous prodding by us?? Simple Answer is, we Pakistanis are not pushed by what is happening in India. India is not that as important to us as UK, USA or any other Western country is. Reason is simple, many Pakistanis have sisters, uncles, brothers and friends living there. Therefore, For us, republican candidate running for Senate election in New York is much more important than Rahul Gandhi Contesting in Alllahabad. so why shud we be discussing UP elections as those won't effect us or our dear ones.. .. . Most of Pakistanis here even don't know where exactly UP is and what does it stand for.. Reason is Simple, we need not to.
Always enlightening to read you ma'am! And you're right on the money here !
