Hindu doctors’ murder: Court orders release of detained children, women

KARACHI: The women and children believed to be in illegal police custody turned out to be accused of obstructing the arrests of absconding accused in the murder case of two doctors and a common citizen in Shikarpur on November 7.

Presenting alleged detainees on order of Sindh High Court here on Friday, the respondent police officers said that they were not arrested though they attacked and obstructed a police party which raided their village in search of one Ghulam Muhammad Qazi, Bhayo by caste and alleged mastermind in killing of the Hindu doctors.  However, the villagers denied the charge.

The Investigating Officer and other respondent police officers said that they were not formally arrested as no evidence was available against them.

The division bench of Sindh High Court, comprising Justice Maqbool Baqar and Justice Imam Bux Baloch, then ordered the deletion of the names of women and minors from the FIR registered on the charge of obstructing government servants from performing official duty. The bench also ordered that male members be released on furnishing personal bond of Rs10,000 each.

The same bench had on Tuesday ordered District Police Officer Shikarpur to produce these 15 women and children who were allegedly in the custody of an influential landlord.

Shamshad Qureshi advocate represented the petitioners while AAG Adnan Karim Memon appeared for the state.

The bench was hearing a constitutional petition filed by Khursheed Ahmed Bhayo and two others against Home Secretary Sindh, IG Sindh, DPO Shikarpur, DSP Lakhi, SHO Chak and SHO of Bachal Bhayo police station.

The petitioners maintained that women Subhan, Aasiya, Samina Ramzan, Saika, Samina A Jabbar,  Jindal,  Guddi and Farida and children Naeem ( 4), Amir (2), Majid (5), Fiaza (2), Mujeeb-ur-Rahman ( 6), Javeria

(5) and one-month-old Zaheer were taken away from their homes in Satumpur village on Dec 9, 2011.

Maintaining that one of the detained women is six month pregnant, petitioner prayed to the court to intervene and ask the police to recover the detainees and hand them over to their families. The bench after initial hearing ordered police to produce the detainees before it on Dec 23.
