ISLAMABAD:

Last week, a man in Mirpurkhas narrowly managed to escape severe punishment after throwing acid on a woman because the presidential approval was still pending over the landmark Acid Control and Acid Crime Prevention Bill 2010.

Nearly a week after the incident, President Asif Ali Zardari approved on Thursday two landmark bills seeking enhanced punishment for several offences against women.

President Zardari signed the two bills on Thursday to coincide with the national day for working women to highlight the government’s commitment towards protecting women against abuse, the president’s spokesperson said.
