When I was in university studying Indian history, I spent a lot of my time thinking why the partition happened. After all, Muslims and Hindus had lived in South Asia, for over a millennia — what had changed now? Also, as Gandhi mentioned, Hindus and Muslims in India were from the same stock racially and thus hardly different in that respect. Among other factors, one reason stood out as one of the most critical elements in the Partition — intolerance. The Partition happened not simply because Muslims were a separate nation, or that Hindus were a separate nation, it happened because some people (on both the Hindu and Muslim sides) could not tolerate living with each other and, hence, had to be separated. The carnage of Partition — where hundreds of thousands of people; innocent Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and others were killed on both sides of the divide — was a testament to the level of intolerance which had pervaded the society.
Since Partition, the curse of intolerance has not left the subcontinent. It seems that people here are still enslaved by their primordial sense of violence and discrimination. We might have better infrastructure, industry, and the luxuries of modern life, but if we still cannot rise above such basic evils, we have not yet reached ‘civilisation’.
The major religions of the world teach that humans are primarily good beings, who have fallen from the grace of God because of sin. In a way, the struggle for humankind is to undo that sin so that humans might be reconciled to God and live in the beatific vision of God in heaven. Therefore, it is thinking of the ‘self’ in all things (the root cause of Adam and Eve’s sin), which needs to be mastered and curtailed. Intolerance too comes from putting oneself at the centre of the universe, rather than God. Obviously, if God is the centre and we all are His creation, then everyone has to be treated equally and with respect. It is this goal in life that all of us hope to achieve and struggle towards — but it seems that in this Pakistan is still far behind.
It will be Christmas in a few days — which is both a Christian and a Muslim feast. Obviously, Jesus Christ is the central figure in Christianity but, he is also one of the most important prophets in Islam. The Holy Quran says: “We sent Jesus, son of Mary: We gave him the Gospel and put compassion and mercy into the hearts of his followers.” (57:27). Among other things, the message of Christ was of repentance and tolerance. In his famous comment, Jesus said that if someone strikes you on one cheek, present him the other. This was the extreme example of tolerance where even harm was responded to by compassion.
Similarly, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) worked tirelessly to end intolerance in society he was in and tried to ensure that all people could live together in peace and harmony. His efforts at making peace among the various feuding tribes in Arabia, his treaties with Jewish tribes, his excellent relations with Christian kings, are all testament to the centrality of tolerance in his message.
In this season which reminds us of the birth of Christ or Isa; let us reinvent Pakistan and create it on the basis of love and tolerance, rather than intolerance and hatred, and move ahead on our quest to be reunited completely with our Maker.

A good approach. Mr. Bangash, "intolerance" still prevails in Pakistan where Taseer and Shahbaz Bhatti's Murder are clear examples of it. Sadly, this has been and will always be, till we change ourselves. Being a Christain and even studying at a Christian Institute, I'm a victim of it :) The worst part is, educated class being intolerant. My identity other than a Christian is Pakistan and what I can do for Jinnah's so-called Pakistan is "Keep my mouth shut" to survive in this nation and let my fellow community survive too.
@Yasir: It implies muslims are lagging in every field be it science, technology, education, innovation and creativity.
It's so sad that instead of being appalled, the posts are full of either people denying the existence of any discrimination or heaping abuse on the author. Great article mr bangash. Merry Christmas
@antanu:
India, though the largest democratic country, there are eating joints with tags “ONLY FOR MUSLIMS”, “ONLY FOR HINDUS” and so on.
Liar.
The only thing that is there for Muslims, is 'after life'; 'this life' is for kafirs.
@gp65, Yes u right good and expensive foods chain have china made (kanch & matty) plates they used and i have eaten many places but i was talking the road stalls and low cost rest.
@Ali Tanoli: "In west no body used same glass for water or same plate for food most of the Restaurant use foam pr paper plates and about pakistanis cleans rest rooms please that every body do in america or west we have Gora guy local american who does this and in west there is no shame in working and thats a reason they are far ahead from third world like prophet Said Labour is god friend. "
I agree with part of what you said i.e. there is no shame in doing any work. I d'n't think paper products are used in nice restaurants to serve food at least in the USA. Ofcourse in very low end chains like McDonalds, Taco Bell etc. that is the case. In any good resturant though food is served in Chinaware and ofcourse in that case there is o concept of separating the China based on the faith of the customer.
@MyComment: "We can’t possibly celebrate the birth of God! (as the majority of christians celebrate for this very belief)."
Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ who is a prophet for the Christians (and I believe also the Muslims). IT does not celebrate the birth of God.
@Saif: "I agree with the gist of it, but the aythor has made a few big mistakes. I’ll point to just one:The major religions of the world teach that humans are primarily good beings, who have fallen from the grace of God because of sin. Islam doesn’t say that."
Agree Saif. Neither for that matter does Hinduism or Buddhism.
@antanu: " In India, though the largest democratic country, there are eating joints with tags “ONLY FOR MUSLIMS”, “ONLY FOR HINDUS” and so on."
I was born in India and lived there until I was 35. nI have extensively travelled within India and I have NEVER seen a sign that says 'Only for Hindus'. Can you please say where you saw this? Please name a specific city and restaurant like this author has done to make it verifiable. Do not make some generic statement.
Also you mention that this is a social evil and should not be linked with religion. True enough. If you read the full opinion piece it will become clear that the author is not blaming Islam the religion in any way. But the people who are misusing the fair name of Islam to practice bigotry. This is based on what he saw in his own community.
@TightChuddi: "What is this? an editorial or a sermon?"
Nether. It is simply an opinion piece.
@Alicia In west no body used same glass for water or same plate for food most of the Restaurant use foam pr paper plates and about pakistanis cleans rest rooms please that every body do in america or west we have Gora guy local american who does this and in west there is no shame in working and thats a reason they are far ahead from third world like prophet Said Labour is god friend.
You need to be more specific - who needs to be tolerant and towards who...
@Ali Tanoli: Ali Mian, Please ignore this Antanu guy. He has been pretending to be an Indian and has posted blatant lies about our country.
We don't have separate hotels/restaurant for Hindus or Muslims. I would prefer to die before I see that happening in India. And I bet my feelings are shared by almost every Indian.
As someone already pointed out, the restaurants do make sure that people know what they are ordering/eating because different faith require different things.
Sincerely
A very well explained and well written article. It is very heartening to see such thoughts being expressed openly.
One of the reasons why there is so much hatred for things Indian or Hindu among a large number of Pakistanis is what is taught to them in early schooling. Some of the comments in this post are reflecting that hatred very clearly. Indians are not very fond of Pakistanis, but they do not hate them. Necessary action needs to be taken to remedy this, in the interest of people in general.
@antanu: You are such a lair, you lie about India just to soften the image of Pakistan. For what i understand may not have ever been to India but you still make ridiculous statements. I wonder why every time a Pakistani has to criticize or introspect about their own country or their own behavior they have to drag India with it. For your own God's sake, free yourself, stop attaching yourself with India. You are on your own, so just learn to live your life.
@antanu, I never been to india but i have some T,V programes like other day i was watching Ted English traveling to Dehli india and he went to some famous hotels in dehli and he asked the indian chef about Steaks or pork u know i was amazed when indian chef told him that india is hindu and muslim faith society so u we dont have both thing so please dont shoot in the air.
We send Jesus son of Mary; we gave the Gospel, and put compassion and mercy in the hearts of his followers. (If some one true believer which is hard to find these days)
Nice article -- based on some of the comments the author must have hit an obvious exposed nerve. It's pretty clear that intolerant people are the last to recognize that they are intolerant.
@antanu There are no 'for Hindus only' or 'for Muslims only' hotels in India. It is an offence. Yes in some small hotels and eateries, you see a board 'Hindu hotel' or 'Muslim hotel'. Hindu hotel- Zatka method of killing animals, no beef etc. Muslim hotel- Halal method, beef available, no pork etc. So it is purely for people's information. Similarly, we have green mark on every vegetarian food product package and red one for non-veg.
@alicia: I don't think the existence of separate bowls and glasses is an indication that everyone considers Christians na-pak. For instance, this sort of practice seems quite prevalent in households with regards to servants (who normally tend to be of Islamic faith). I have always assumed that it is not because of religion, but because of their lack of hygiene or social class factors that such sort of behavior is still exhibited.
Personally speaking, I have no issues of using utensils, glasses or any other sort of cutlery of "gora christians", "Hindus" or even "Muslims" (The reason I put this in inverted commas is because I abhor classifying people based on faiths; that is a personal matter and should remain so). If they are properly washed and cleaned, I'll be happy to eat from any stall; so long as I don't end up with food poisoning :)
I agree with the gist of it, but the aythor has made a few big mistakes. I'll point to just one:The major religions of the world teach that humans are primarily good beings, who have fallen from the grace of God because of sin. Islam doesn't say that.
@antanu:
Such a thing is not possible in India, unless they are serving either pork or beef. Even if it is the case, it is subtly made obvious and not with a blatant "only for hindu/muslim" tags. So Sir, put your money where your mouth is and tell us where you found this place. Being an apologist is one thing, but, fooling yourself with made-up facts (like you did) is the height of cowardice.
Very good article and a very realistic analysis of reasons of partition of sub-continent. But now we are living deep in the culture of hatred and killings and this has no limits. We need good leaders to control it and teach us culture of tolerance and peace.
@Blunt U right bro no body knows who said that after what we saw in iraq and afghanistan. @Alicia, I have eaten chart masala from christian stalls in karachi and i dont how many diffrent faiths peoples used the same plates but i will say yes its happend when some hindu or christian cleaning wala comes with them discrimination do happend but peoples give them food or water in seprate glass or plates...
@Abdullah I agree there might not be a stall like this in Lahore but I have obseverved that most Pakistanis consider eating with their christian counterparts as na-pak. They have seperate bowls, seperate glasses for them. The funny thing is once these Pakistanis go abroad they are eating and often cleaning the utensils of gora christians. Wonder why this change?
Though its despicable...such nonsense exist every where. In India, though the largest democratic country, there are eating joints with tags "ONLY FOR MUSLIMS", "ONLY FOR HINDUS" and so on.Its a social evil and should not be linked with religion.Though such things happen still there are majority of eating joints having no reservation about religious beliefs. So on the basis of minor discrimination you can not condemn an entire country or community.
its all non sense i live in lahore cantt and there is no such stall only for muslim in 95% muslim country there is no need for such things either ,hindu muslim or christen harmony is not an isuue in pakistan where hindu are hardly 2% christen2% and others 1% so this articale is purely A RAW PRODUCT we cant give un due lift to 2% each minorities rest sikh are 5000 in number out of 200 million so no need of muslim only stalls
All this time I used to think that it was said by Gandhi! XD
Good Article. Its extremely unfortunate that we live in a society where even the educated people carry within themselves the religious biasness. The moderates don't raise their voice due to fear of mullah machinery which exist in our country. Its important to survive in this society to keep the mouth zipped, if you are not a Muslim.
What is this? an editorial or a sermon?
Mr.Bangash, thank you for a very well written article offering a convincing explanation how the religious intolerance has molded our social and political values. We are Muslims only in name but in reality miles away from practicing true Islamic values of tolerance and coexistence Religious Fanaticism and Violence is ripping the country apart. Time has come to take a serious look into our historical and social roots as to who we were, where we came from and why we became lost into this chaos?
Very nice put it i agreed sir but Reversed discrimination is very bad so we better seprated.
