Dialogue between Indian and Pakistani scholars on peri-urbanism, exploring potential environmental, health and governance issues may help improve conditions of these areas, said to a press release issued by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute on Friday.
Peri-urban areas are transition zones where urban and rural activities are juxtaposed to rapid modifications induced by human activities. Peri-urban areas occupy large portions of national landscapes and are home to millions of people who face unique problems: resource pressures, slum formation, lack of adequate services like water and sanitation, poor planning and farmland degradation. These areas are often neglected because they are located outside rural and urban administrative boundaries.
In a conference on Friday, SDPI Executive Director Dr Abid Q Suleri stated that the problems faced by both India and Pakistan were similar and so too must their solutions be. “These joint research initiatives will bring our citizens closer to one another which is vital for normalisation of relationships between South Asian neighbours,” he said.
East-West Centre Research Fellow Dr Sumeet Saksena stated that there is no clear definition of peri-urban and urged for a definition that will enable stakeholders to take care of citizens in these areas.

@Mard-e-Haq:
Propagation of Gandhian methods by a Pakistani! Hilarious and very interesting. Why not follow Jinnah's footsteps and threaten war? Oh wait, you have already tried that..
@Pajja Daang Wala @Mard-e-Haq @Marriyam Fully agree with you brothers and sister. Thanks for support.
Inept leaders stay in power by focusing anger at outsiders --- nothing works well in Pakistan except the xenophobic blame game -- until that changes Pakistan will never be a true friend of India.
@ Hu Jintao
You are absolutely right. Just try the Gandhian approach and shame into realizing their bigotry. Do not answer eye to eye, or tit-for-tit. Many of them have not met a single Pakistani. This takes patience. But it's not just the Indians who post vulgar anti-Pakistani comments. Because of our leaders and mullahs, not to mention terrorists, Pakistan has acquired a very bad reputation.
@Hu Jintau - Agree with you bro . . . .India will always backstab Pakistan and pit other countries against Pakistan to degrade and weaken it. Cannot trust an enemy. . . . the only enemy Pakistan has is India . . .so do not be fooled, walk carefully with it and always watch your back!
Let us not be enemies of each-other if we can't be friends.
