After nearly six months of physical abuse, Shehnila* has finally escaped her alleged torturers - her husband and father-in-law.
Shehnila*, 26, made the claims at a press conference held at the office of her lawyer Zia Ahmed Awan on Friday. The Karachi University graduate married Faiyaz Mulji on April 20 of this year. While their families didn’t agree to the union, the couple privately registered their marriage in the city court. She moved in to her husband’s home on July 1, but her relationship turned violent only 15 days later.
“My father-in-law would join him in beating me,” she said. According to Shehnila*, she tried to leave several times but was forced to go back. “I was in touch with Zia Sb and was advised to leave with all of my important documents.”
Human rights lawyer Zia Ahmed Awan explained why he advised Shehnila* to do this. “Often we have cases where the women just flee but they have no passport, identity card, educational documents and it is very difficult to get these issued again.”
She eventually managed to escape her house on December 8, but not before the father and son beat her so brutally that she was bedridden for three days.
“They stripped me, shoved chillies in my private parts and tried to force me to drink urine.” She said the duo also bit her and beat her with sticks and slippers.
Shehnila* also claims that her father-in-law would try to forcibly enter her room, forcing her to hide in a bathroom until he would leave for work. When she tried to tell her husband, who often travels to Gadap for work, he refused to believe her and beat her for “telling lies”.
“At first I wasn’t sure if my parents would support me, given that I had eloped,” she said, “But they came through for me.” An emotional Shehnila* advised girls to never marry against their parent’s will, no matter how well they think they know the other person.
“I want justice, they should be punished the way they needlessly punished me!”
The police have not cooperated with Shehnila*. “I went several times to register a compliant at the Soldier Bazaar police station but the on-duty officer Zia refused to file a First Information Report (FIR).” She managed to get through to the SHO but he has been procrastinating. She has also pointed out problems with her medico legal examination, and said the female Medico Legal Officer (MLO) took pictures of her scars and bruises with her cell phone camera without her consent. “She also conducted the examination at the Police Surgeon Office and not at Civil hospital,” she said. “The male MLOs would come one after another and keep asking me questions about my bruises.” According to Awan, “This kind of an examination is denying Shehnila* her rights.”

I plead to the Govt officials and concerned authorities to take prompt measures against this barbaric crime and provide this lady with justice that she truly deserves. The culprits should be detained in high torture cells and beaten to death. This is a very sensitive issue and is highly probable to recur sooner than predicted, if not nipped in the bud.
oh my god this is tooo much they shud get punished
@ Hatu What is wrong with YOU? if somebody did the same thing to your sister, what would you do?! I would like to know what would be a reasonable thing for you to do?!
@ Muslim What are you going to give the other side a chance for? to explain why they shoved chillies in the private parts?! what justification is there for something so horrendous like that?!!!!
I am totally with Shazia Aziz, because i know for a fact she is not lying. No girl would like to destroy the bond of marriage unless it threatens her life. I myself was a victim by the hands of my husband, though my father in law never touched me, but he used to highly encourage my beatings, and yes, used to watch me get beaten up. My lawyer, turned out to be useless as he took money from their side to keep his mouth shut.
So, we women are left just to pray that these men burn in hell.
it is high time that domestic abuse and marital rapes were regarded as crimes by our society and our law................is equal to open rebellion against the misogynous laws of their religion!.......... Just imagine a reformer like Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is born in this country, who has the guts to ban this Arab cult of burqas, physical violence against women, gender segregation, curse of triple talaq and total equality of men and women in all sectors of social life.....................................Turkey is a wonderful country and Turks are great and peace loving people!
MK > are they humans or dogs,
Don't insult dogs. Dogs don't do such horrible things. These kind of acts are only associated with human beings.
someone told me that 95% of divorce cases are registered not because there is some issue with husband or wife..It is due to the fact that those people marriage was not right from the beginning. People after some months of mobile love and "special outings" decided to marry when they simply are not fit for each other...also when a person marriage is decided by his parents, he is answerable to a lot of people when doing such stuff with a girl. Whereas in love marriages, girl remains in total loss because nor man's family dosnt accept him neither her own family..so she is an easy victim
Also if someone please try to collect data, the divorce ratio is much higher in love marriages compare to arranged marriages. Also in recent years divorce cases, 90% of marriages are done on love basis and started from chat on mobile...and there divorce ratio is 95% :)
Someone please do confirm this data...
De-politicize the police, and get some retired General (army) as an head of the Provincial police. I hate the govt, and we are to be blamed. Stand up against the govt. bring a revolution- We have a population of 180 Million Pakistanis. And lets say 5Million of them are corrupt and disgraceful Pakistanis; we still have 175 Million to stand up against them. I swear to my country if they stand up, i would be there to join them- no matter how far i live, where i live, I will be there in Pakistan to fight against the corrupts. I'm studying just because i need to gain knowledge on how to tackle these situations and bring back one country back on its path to success; rather than getting a degree. It's all about knowledge not the paper/certificate.
So the women protection bill was passed by NA, great now the problem is who will be enforcing it. Police seems uninterested, judiciary can do jack *hit. So what else is left to do, it comes down the individuals, who must stand up for their rights and the society must support them. Sighs but none will happen.
There is definitely something wrong with the males in the Pakistani society. Is it the machismo, the illitracy, the baradri culture, the so called "honor", or the tribalism; the males need some education. I'd definitely recommend castration of both son and father,as a deterrence against such behavior.
I think the father son were mentally sick. Why would anyone want to do something like this to their own fmaily members. The givt must set up a high level enquiry into this matter
@Muslim: If it’s true, it is very unfortunate!! However, the other side needs to be heard before being condemned.
The picture is worth a thousand word, @Muslim. What part do you not understand of there being NO justification whatsoever for physical and emotion violence against a woman? People like you allow such heinous crimes to carry on because of the non-sense. In this case, whatever the son and father-in-law have to say is hod wash. They must be punished to set an example for other macho men.
If it's true, it is very unfortunate!! However, the other side needs to be heard before being condemned.
We are so intolerant, lawless people!!! Death sentence, for what? torturing someone. are you people outta your mind. Be reasonable.
So sad. Justice may be served.
Sick.
Both needs to be hung but that won’t happen in Pakistan because women are lesser human beings.
Death Sentence! in public!
The father and the son should be severly punished by the court of law.
horrible. shoved chillies down private parts? are they humans or dogs, don't they fear God at all?
lynching in public to make an example for everyone else.
the problem is that our society doesn't regard domestic violence as a form of abuse.the mentality of people in our society is that the wife is the private property of the husband to do with as he pleases.the maulvis reinforce this horrible mentality by quoting verses that justify beating one's wife.it is high time that domestic abuse and marital rapes were regarded as crimes by our society and our law. The abuse mentioned above is common enough in our society,a society where our men think that they are a gift from heaven for the women.Kudos to this girl for having the bravery to leave her abusive husband.she is a courageous lady and needs to get the full support of the police and the judiciary.
Death sentence.
