Vettel on pole for German Grand Prix

HOCKENHEIM: Sebastian Vettel clocked the fastest time for Red Bull in qualifying for today’s German Grand Prix which completed a hat-trick of pole positions. This is Vettel’s sixth pole of the season and meant that Red Bull have now taken ten out of eleven races this year.

Fernando Alonso will start second on the grid ahead of his Ferrari teammate Brazilian Felipe Massa. Mark Webber will start fourth after a poor first corner on his final lap.

McLaren drivers Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton will start fifth and sixth respectively ahead of pole Robert Kubica of Renault and Williams driver Brazilian Rubens Barichello. Germans Nico Rosberg of Mercedes and Nico Hulkenberg in the second Williams completed the top ten.

All three debutants of this season were eliminated along with Force India driver Vitantonio Liuzzi who crashed after running wide at the last corner just five minutes into the session, and Virgin driver Timo Glock narrowly escaped a stray wheel as he went past the Force India car.

Disappointing

The biggest disappointment of the day was seven times champion German Michael Schumacher of Mercedes failing to make the top ten shoot out after Williams driver Nico Hulkenberg knocked him out of the top ten in the final seconds of Q2. The 42-year-old was eliminated along with 12th fastest Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber, Vitaly Petrov of Renault, Sauber driver Pedro de la Rosa, Toro Rosso drivers Jaime Alguesuari and Sebastien Buemi and Lotus drivers Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen.
