Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Thursday presided over the cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat. Aside from the Nato attacks, the cabinet discussed the reform of loss-making government entities.
Gilani expressed his resolve regarding restructuring Pakistan International Airlines, Pakistan Railways, the steel mills and KESC. The PM added he would personally monitor the progress in this area. The cabinet was also briefed about President Zardari’s health before praying for a speedy recovery. Additionally, a deep sense of satisfaction was expressed that Ashura passed peacefully.
The cabinet also approved the ratification of the Preferential Trade Agreement among the D-8 Muslim countries, which consist of Bangladesh, Indonesia, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, Nigeria and Pakistan. The agreement sets out tariff reductions among the countries. Finally, the PM has now decided to hold the cabinet meeting every week, rather than the usual practice of having a fortnightly session.
