Virender Sehwag smashed the highest score in One-Day International (ODI) cricket last night – an epic 219 off just 149 balls – as West Indies crashed to a series-defeat, losing the match by 153 runs, despite Dinesh Ramdin’s valiant run-a-ball 96.
The 33-year-old joined compatriot Sachin Tendulkar as the only batsmen to hit double-centuries in the 50-over format when he passed 200 in the 44th over in Indore.
Sehwag surpassed Tendulkar’s 200 when, on 197, he cut Andre Russell to the point fence for his 23rd boundary.
Boundaries galore
The Delhi batsman hit 25 boundaries and seven sixes before he was caught in the deep off Kieron Pollard in the 47th over.
Sehwag’s blitz helped India pile up their highest ODI total of 418 for five, surpassing the 414 for seven they made against Sri Lanka in Rajkot in 2009.
It was Sehwag’s 15th three-figure knock in ODIs and the first since making 175 against Bangladesh in the opening match of the World Cup in Dhaka earlier this year.
Sehwag, who is leading India in the series in the absence of the rested MS Dhoni, had managed just 46 runs in the previous three matches.
He was dropped on 170 by West Indies captain Darren Sammy and put on 176 for the opening wicket with Gautam Gambhir (67) and 140 for the second with Suresh Raina (55).
Pitch made it easy: Sehwag
“I had never dreamt of doing this,” said Sehwag. “The easy pitch and the short boundaries made it easier. I told Gauti (Gambhir) that if we showed a little patience we could get a big one. But I never expected to make a double century.
“The pitch was so true that one could play all shots. When Sammy dropped me, I knew God was with me. I am relieved but also tired because I am an old man now. I just want to thank my family and all those who have supported me in my career.”
Sehwag also has two triple Test centuries to his credit, one of only four batsmen to achieve the feat.
Earlier, in reply to India’s highest ODI total, the West Indies were bowled out for 265 in the fourth international.
Debutant leg-spinner Rahul Sharma picked up three wickets in his first three overs as the tourists were outplayed despite wicket-keeper Ramdin’s defiant knock.
Ramdin put on 64 for the last wicket with Sunil Narine (27 not out) before he was caught in the deep attempting to score his maiden ODI century.
The final match of the series will be played in Chennai on Sunday.

Haha...it is so easy to rile up Indians.. The are 'inflammable' ..
@ET, so when are you going to remove this news post from the front page. Lets move on...
Sehwag is a great batsmen, period. Why dont we admit it.
@Cynical: Agreed!
@cric fan mani
You are truly a fan of cricket and I admire you for that. Healthy debate about finer points of the game is welcome. Problem is more often than not we get involved in one-upmanship and digress into petty nationalism and hero worship at the cost of the very game of cricket we all cherish.
@Cynical: My reasoning is flawed. All three batsmen are wonderfully talented. And indeed in todays cricket, I doubt there is anyone who can break the 200 barrier other than the two batsmen who have. My apologies for what I wrote above.
@yusuf
Do normal beings also play in Indian team ????? I think @Rikky was trying to be funny. But never the less I admire your sense of humour.
@cric fan mani
For a long time the record of highest individual ODI score was with Saeed Anwar (a fine player in my book). He scored that 194 in Chennai (India). Never heard anyone talking about pitches and short boundaries till the record changed hand.
I, for my life, can't understand why the overseas batsmen can't take advantage of shorter boundaries (unless someone tells me that it requires special practice to negotiate shorter boundaries). Also you mentioned three highest score all made in India. Do you think the batsmen involved are all techniqueless-slogger?
The three highest odi scores have been in India. Which tells you that their pitches and short boundaries are great for techniqueless-slogging. Look at IPL for instance. And who plays the most matches in India? India! So, it is no surprise, it is simple reasoning that their batsmen hold these records. We should effectively disregard high scores inside India when discussing records.
@Cricket...!!!
That's the spirit. The game is bigger than the individual.
@Imran Mohammad:
Sehwag in Test 195 in Melbourne, 201 in Galle, 180 in WI, 151 in Adelaide, 254 in Lahore etc
Sehwag in ODI
out of 15 centuries only 4 are in Indian wicket, other centuries are in outside..
I think better than any Pak batsmen, at least better than Anwar, Javed Miandad and 100 times better than Afridi...
@Udaya Bose
I said "outside India/Pakistan" .. Multan is in Pakistan. Please count me Veeru's achievements outside the country.
@Imran Mohammad: I suppose Multan is "outside India" or are you not sure about that? He got a triple century with a six against "fearsome" Pakistani attack. How's that? You know what? The more you cavil against Indian achievements, the pettier you look.
@Udaya Bose
Saeed Anwar used to score outside India/Pakistan unlike Veeru.
@Imran Mohammad: Sure! Saeed Anwar's 194 doesn't count. Right?
What happens to 'Veeru' outside India. Lets see what happens in Australia. Any big score on dead Indian wickets is not a big deal.
@Cricket....!!!: SPOT ON BRO
Well done veeru. Waiting to see your next double century with 250 run.
@DS: Sehwag is a master blaster no doubt....Tendulkar is also a living legend...so are Dhoni, Laxman and Dravid..... But do not ....please...do not bring Indo-Pak creation into this dialogue....I respect India as a country and you should also respect Pakistan.....Full stop....when all the comments are so well tempered and feel good mannered...then why do you want to spring up a new debate here...regarding whether pakistan was made rightly or not....leave that to some other place.....for the time being enjoy the Sehwag's blitzkrieg ...in highlights,on you tube and everywhere...enjoy.. .take a bow....Sehwag we love you.....we love cricket and we respect all good players ... whichever nation they belong to....... from a true cricket lover who loves cricket beyond nationality...
@Green eyed Pakistani: you are right dear. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad already said in 1947 that the greatest mistake was to draw a line and future generations shall hardly be able to agree on anything among both sides
hey i read an article on "SEHWAG' s 200 CONTROVERSIAL" ....I like the article but i saw that viewers from INDIA posted dirty comments on the article...u can search this article on google.
GOod to see a general consensus , not normal when Pakistan and India readership come across!!!!!!!!...........
@yusuf: Another one who is not a normal is Yusuf Pathan sadly out of form these days watch him against the SA pace attack http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLVyH44HA .
I like his simplicity towered batting, sees the ball and hits it. Coaching can take a break when he bats. Great innings, well done, warm congratulations to Viru and indians. Amongst modern day batsmen, only Gayle has any real chance of beating this score, and of course the man himself.
@Rajsofa King Dummmm: You do brother.Thats why you managed to take out some time from your busy schedule to comment on SUCH A NEWS.
Who cares if Sehwag created a record? Why is this news anyway?
@buhha!: I have been praying for my beloved President Asif Ali Zardari's speedy recovery.
If schewag was fully fit England tour will be totally different because India heavily depend on this explosive batsman.Hope he will be fully fit for Australia and continue to treat fans all over the world
Not get anything away from his achievement i would like to question the grounds men how mus the size was reduced how dead was the pitch. Indian grounds men are "Very patriotic" no doubt.
@Ali Hamza: Iqbal is referring to the only 4 players who have scored two triple centuries in Tests. The others you named have only 1 triple to their credit.
@yusuf: If you're calling 'em normal than i guess pakistani band is nowhere in cricket.
What an amazing player. The bowlers of the world are lucky that he is not as consistent as Sachin - which would've made him their worst nightmare. I saw the highlights of the innings - and it was amazing to see him smashing the bowlers like that. Pitch support or no pitch support - that was phenomenal batting.
what a powerful bating it is sehvag jai hoooooooo. what a nice playing it is ya**
@Raj: Any kid can hit few sixes and fours and get back to pavilion in few minutes,only real man can survive till the end.So your lala can certainly score 300 but it may take minimum 10 matches.
Sachin: God of Cricket. Sehwag: Rajinikanth of Cricket.

Awesome, but Sachin's double hundred against SA was more sensational and enjoyable being the first one.
As Waqar Younis said, "Sehwag is the only batsman who can destroy fast bowling without even using his feet!"
@ Iqbal
Hats off to a stunning performance by Sehwag. But correcting your comment "only sehwag,lara,gayyle,bradman holds 3ple hundred in test" . There are 20 players yet to score tripple centuries in test cricket. To remind a few Hayden's 380, Jayawardane's 374, Jasuriya 340, Inzamam's 329, Younis Khan's 313 and a few other legends like Sobers
@Raj: why soo late? where you have been??
Shewag, You have proven once again that you are the best.You just made INDIA to feel proud by your stunning,fabulous and awesome innings of 219 runs off just 149 balls.What an innings you have played today quite amazing.So, all the best for "AUSTRALIA TOUR". "TOD DE FOD DE SAB KO PICHE CHOR DE"
Will be broken only by an opener of a strong team against a weak opposition. The only player who can break this record is Lala Afridi if he opens in ODIs. Lala may score over 300 runs if he plays all 50 overs.
It was an awesome interesting match Sehwag was simply rocking and blasting around the boundries. I loved the match.
must admit- apart from gayle this man is perhaps the most destructive batsman you would ever see. PURE CLEAN ENETERTAIMENT.
"Take a bow"
The great viru
It was great to watch
He is just an amazing talent. The state of mind that is Sehwag is the secret to his success. The man is so cool and collected with an ever ready smile. If that is any indication of his approach to life then the secret of his success is being advertised. He deserves more and may God bless him with it.
amazing awesome player...deserves much acclaim....bit disappointed to read some of other paki friends commenting on him on Dawn and other website
kind of cricket going on these days this record is still vulnerable
Congrats Sehwag for smashing 219, its a treat watching you tear apart any opposition's bowling attack. India is blessed with the world's best batsmen as records show the Top Ten higest scoring individuals, 4 Indian batsmen are listed with Sehwag as number 1 (219 runs) and Sachin as number 2 (200 runs) others 8 have scored below 200. Congrats once again Sehwag. All these years, hundreds and hundreds of batsmen have come and gone but only 2 Indians have scored 200 or more runs.
yes..he is champion player...sachin scored 49 century..bradman avarages 99.9 in test..only sehwag,lara,gayyle,bradman holds 3ple hundred in test..,,,,and only sachin and sehwag abve 200 inodi.... yes ..only gayle and sehwag can break this record again in 2 to 3 years................otherwise it look like imposible.... dnt know recrods always ment to break..hope we will get anothher potential like above legends...
god bless them
sehwag stands up first, sachin second, a record that will stay for long time to come
