Veenagate

Letter December 05, 2011
Extremists would like to see every women in Pakistan wearing a burqa so, for them, their ghairat has been tormented.

This is with reference to your editorial of December 4 titled “The Veena Malik brouhaha”. Pakistani society is divided into two camps. The first is that of the extremists — they would like to see every women in Pakistan wearing a burqa so, for them, their ghairat has been tormented by Veena Malik’s photo shoot and they are up in arms against her. The other camp is the liberals. For them, Veena Malik is a source to attack the so-called ‘ghairatmand’ brigade… ignoring the fact that liberty doesn’t mean the liberty to portray a woman as a sexual object. They also seem to be ignoring that Ms Malik is doing precisely that.
