WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama says he plans to restrict the use of atomic weapons as part of a major US nuclear policy overhaul.

During an interview with the New York Times, Obama said the new strategy would substantially narrow the conditions under which the US would use nuclear weapons. He said exceptions would be made for states like Iran and North Korea who refuse to cooperate.

Obama described his policy as part of a broader effort to edge the world towards making nuclear weapons obsolete. He also aimed to create incentives for countries to give up any nuclear ambitions.
