Protecting our interests

July 22, 2010

NEW YORK: Your report titled ‘India finds route to Kabul via Pakistani exports’ (July 20) describes how Pakistan has allowed Afghan trucks to proceed to its ports and to the Wagah border for trading purposes. I am appalled by our government’s lack of keeping the interests of its people. Even the US as the greatest champion of free trade and free movements of goods makes sure that its citizens benefit from any economic treaty. When it signed the Nafta with Mexico, under pressure from its trucking industry, it made sure that Mexican trucks would have to stop at the border, unload and then pass on the goods to US trucks across the fence. It’s high time we take care of our interests.
