Imran Khan was put through the wringer on Express News flagship show Frontline with Kamran Shahid, who put the enigmatic cricketer-turned–politician in front of a young crowd, comprising former party members, school students and aspiring voters to face hard questions over his party policies and the admission of some questionable people into the party fold recently.
Asked about why he had let in people like Zaffar Iqbal, who over saw the Lal Masjid incident, and Mian Azhar who had stood with former President General Pervez Musharraf when he had subverted the constitution.
Khan responded, saying that neither of these men were involved in financial corruption and hence were good choices for the party. “If you enlist politicians, they often come with a baggage,” stressing that it was important to include those who shared the leaders vision of the party. He went on to quote an example from the early days of Islam when the Holy Prophet (PBUH) included people from Makkah, many of those had killed Muslims, but were included because they shared the Prophet (PBUH) vision.
The PTI chief clarified that the party was still under construction, with a cabinet committee yet to be formed and tickets yet to be handed out. He insisted that tickets and posts will only be given out on merit.
Though repeated questions pertaining to new members including the prized capture of Shah Mahmood Qureishi, forced Khan to defend his party, saying unless the party took on board political heavy weights, he would be fighting elections alone, and he would then not be able to acquire the power in parliament that he needed to bring about change.
“You are asking me to close doors to PTI, the party then would not have anyone in the ranks,” he said, before calling the line of questioning as part of a conspiracy against PTI’s membership drive.
Explaining about the candidates that he would field in different constituencies, Khan said that urban centres would see young, educated people handed tickets. Those in rural areas would see members accordingly.
Asked about allegations that he was supported by the establishment, and since PML-N had at one point been supported by the establishment, as was the PML-Q, and why could not the PTI then be open about it, Khan agreed. He said that PML-N and Q were supported by the establishment, but the establishment, Khan argued, could not bring about a tsunami.
One question though made Khan squirm in his seat. A former PTI member from Balochistan, said he had resigned from the party after no clear policy on the crisis ridden province was forthcoming from the party leader. He said that people were being killed in Balochistan, and if there was Indian involvement there, why has not Khan come out and taken a stand on it?
Khan could only supplicate a weak reply saying “the situation in Balochistan is very bad but we cannot do anything till we come in power”.

In the present circumstances we can not say that Imran Khan is responsible for any thing as so far he has neither come in power nor the people in Pakistan were considering his party worth mentioning in the national politics. Now although it is astonishing as to how the people are entering his party in such a huge number, the personality of Mr Imran Khan can not be made doubtful in fact the Pakistani nation was in search of a leader which they consider they would get in the person of Imran Khan. So being patriotic Pakistanis it is more proper to give a chance to Imran Khan rather to raise questions.
I think it is absolutely a shame that he won't depend on the youngsters he is leading to be the ones occupying those seats in parliament. Given that he had 15 years, he had plenty of time to bring the youth onboard. That he has not shows his commitment to bringing change. My questions: If his party can't reflect change, how can he bring it across Pakistan? Given those thousands of supporters, he couldn't find the heart or courage to give even a few seats to them? The youth will only be a spectator?
we want change , change means new leadership and thats imran thats it stop fussing as we have no other option better than him
People of Pakistan are looking for change, Waiting for change, Ready for change and PTI is working for this change under the leadership of Imran Khan for last 15 yrs.
PTI is not ready to lead or steer this change as IK said, he has to take people in his cadre to be functional otherwise he will be the only leader in his party.
For the last 15 years, what was you doing IK? - Was not able to set up PTI Party Structure?
He said that PML-N and Q were supported by the establishment, but the establishment, Khan argued, could not bring about a tsunami.
As the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and the 2011 Japanese Tsunami showed, all that the tsuamis do is leave behind vast destruction. I don't get Imran Khan's fascination with this analogy of him bringing about a tsunami in Pakistan -- is devastation the intent?
Those talking about tickets been handed over to the same leaders that were in other party must come ahead and apply for a ticket. If u are rejected with an invalid reason, then u must stand up and speak and media and internet is there to spread ur voice.
What Imran is facing nowadays was very much predictable when he came up with an idea of change & re-shapping the political culture. The point which we all need to understand is that without entertaining few dominant personalities to get them on pannel he can not come into power, which indeed is the fundamental requirement to move forward with the agenda.
Yeah offcourse, making such people part of the crew will definately loose the essence of the objective, but sometimes doing something becomes that step of ladder which can not be skipped to move forward, same is the case with IK.
So istead of putting up unnecessary questions & discouraging the pace he is moving on, we should appreciate him as a last hope. The day, offcourse, is not very far when we'll be able to measure him & his intentions, but for now we should just support.
I am not yet seen the show today i hope to see it, in any case imran Khan zindabad
I watched the program and it was appalling. Kamran Shahid seemed to be high on something. He would punctuate his "Moderation" with adhominem attacks on IK. IK seemed to hold reasonably well in front of an unreasonable and hostile crowd. All the "students" hand similar printed pages they asked question of and would not let IK finish and repeat the question. Ik definitely was fazed a few times, anyone else would have stormed of the show. It looked like one of those denunciation from students in the cultural revolution. Also the program had a large number of editing cuts, which made it almost impossible to follow. Fro youtube comments of people who claim were their it seems the editing was highly selective. Everyone should watch the program and draw their own conclusions. The media war is getting very ugly ...
I saw the show, poorly conducted by Kamran Shahid, he was continously interrupting.
"Explaining about the candidates that he would field in different constituencies, Khan said that urban centres would see young, educated people handed tickets. Those in rural areas would see members accordingly."
This is good approach. Those who are forcing Khan sb to filed new candidates from rural constituencies are either actually unaware of politics there or do not want PTI to succeed.
See the result of recent election in Bahawalpur. PML-Q win, PML-N loose. PML-N is better reputed than PML-Q but candidate matter a lot in these areas.
This article is pretty biased. The show is there for everyone to see and there were no "weak replies." It makes perfect sense that he really can't do anything until he comes to power. The people were questioning him as though he had already completed a term as President. How can he be cross examined on finding solutions when he hasn't even taken the seat yet?
This is a very biased piece. Its so easy to make someone look bad by quoting things out of the context or putting in incomplete answers of the responder.
we are expecting too much from IK.this is pakistan not america.maximum people give vote on biradri.50 percent people are not educated
We have super high expectations from Imran Khan. We need to understand the difference between urban and rural politics. We all want Imran Khan to bring change and consider him the last ray of hope. Inorder for him to bring change, he needs a majority government. For majority government he needs to have electables joining his party. People in urban areas are educated enough to understand the ideology and constituents will vote based on the party and not the candidate. However, the dynamics in rural areas take a complete 180. Constituents vote based on the candidate that could be their feudal lord, peer etc.
Lets all support Imran Khan. The elections are around the corner and he needs our support more than our criticism. I am sure he has done his home work and InshAllah is the only politician to take Pakistan out of this turmoil.
No amount of propoganda can stop us from supporting Imran Khan. PPP and PNL N are day dreaming.
I'm tried of seeing PPP & PMLN blaming each other and previous govt. for everything .... Its time we see a new leadership .... IK is the perfect candidate for next PM .... Parties with all the policies, visions and teams have failed us for 3 decades .... its time we should just trust a honest person .... Decide now .... because these corrupt mafia will not go down easy and there will be lots of blames PTI will face ..... so support IK no matter what ... because he is the Only OPTION .....
Questions were right and so the answers........ but the students asking the questions were ill-mannered, uncivilized and bad-tempered. Kamran Shahid is a good anchor, he gave tough time to IK but at the same time his behavior towards IK was not like those which he showed towards Musharraf, Salman Taseer etc. He was not giving enough time to IK, twisting the questions. These anchors and media persons were praising SMQ when he resigned in Raymond Davis case, SMQ could have retained his ministership if he had not criticized on American policy at that time. PTI supporters don.t get furious, our youth has expectations from IK, so they deserve to ask questions from him,..............
Yesterday IK was criticized that he had no "electables" and heavy-weights and today his opponents complain that IK have allowed corrupt people into PTI. Bottom line- all those who criticize are NOT his supporters and IK will NEVER win them over.
We support Imran. PMLN and PPP are conspiring against him. They called him Taliban Khan and now they are back to the old Jew story.
Liar Liar Liar.
The revolution of turncoats is coming. What change in Pakistan are you talking about? The change of faces? Change claimed by lotas and military regime supporters? An establishment tool like Khan is executed to destroy the vote bank of PML-N; not to bring revolutionary change in this country.
Come on... ET.... The last para you quoted is nt the complete reply frm Imran.
lolz...he has always been mentioning his stance on balochistan on almost in every speech. He also mentioned it in his 100 days plan...what else u want???....I personally feel that we are expecting tooo much from him right now...
IK we hear that ISI is supporting and launching you.Than who is conspiring against you?
Media is Doing Propoganda against IK but peoples and youth are not mad . Public Knows alll the hidden truth and support PTI (one and only) now its time to show ur strength 25 th dec .. Karchi is still waiting of Kaptaan and ready to join Mizar e Quaid INSHALLAH .. Imran khan zindabad
Fianlly, he has graduated from the poiltical academy, when things don't go their way - cry conspiracy. This is just a first of many set backs Khan sahib. Grow up if you want to play the big boy's games...
