Condolence reference: Speakers shower tributes on Mother of Democracy

Nusrat Bhutto, the “Mother of Democracy”, made the country proud and her life cannot be slotted into boxes or categories. This was the consensus of speakers at a condolence reference organised by the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS), said a press release.

“The nation lost an iconic figure who was a symbol of courage, womanhood and humanitarianism,” said PRCS President Sherry Rehman.

About her role during the refugee crisis, Rehman said that Bhutto worked tirelessly, feeding refugees and providing shelter.

She added that Bhutto represented Pakistan at various international forums; her contributions as the Chairperson of PRCS helped in making the society among the leading humanitarian organisations of the country, monitoring all operations personally.

In his welcome address, PRCS Acting Secretary General Ateeb Siddiqui said that the current infrastructure of the organisation is owed to Bhutto who laid the foundation for its geographic growth.

Other speakers, Fawzia Habib and Tahira Abdullah, highlighted the humanitarian aspects of Bhutto adding that “she will be remembered in history as a role model for subsequent generations.”

The reference was attended by diplomats, dignitaries, PRCS staff members and volunteers. Later, a candlelight vigil was held in remembrance of Bhutto.
