Banning porn websites

Letter November 23, 2011
It appears that the moral fabric and opinions of the Pakistani middle class are not all they are cranked up to be.

KARACHI: In a letter to your newspaper of Nov 22, entitled “In favour of the porn ban”, Mr Aamir Allawala made the somewhat surreal statement, that, “The greatest strength of any nation is the moral fabric of its middle class”.

I assume the writer considers himself middle class, so perhaps we can further assume that he may have participated in the Pew Research Opinion Survey, of late summer 2010, that found that 85 per cent of lower- and middle-class Pakistanis favoured the segregation of men and women in the workplace, 83 per cent favoured stoning adulterers and 80 per cent favoured the lashing of thieves and amputation of their hands.

On the face of it, it appears that the moral fabric and opinions of the Pakistani middle class are not all they are cranked up to be. Mr Allawalla may be better occuppied pondering the above than worrying about banning porn sites.
