Twitter Alert: All praise for Sherry Rehman

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and MNA Sherry Rehman has been appointed Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, and the online response has been largely positive.

The appointment comes after Husain Haqqani was asked to resign by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in the wake of the Memogate scandal. Gilani has approved the appointment. As the news broke, Sherry Rehman quickly rose to become a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.

Here's a round up of some tweets:

Just when you think that Zardari is out of tricks, he plays one of his best. Not a big fan of Sherry Rehman's views on foreign policy, but this decision is the best government can manage.

talhawynne

Women making the scene in #Pakistan politics. From talk shows to the podiums.

ShirazHassan

Good move by government: Sherry Rehman new ambassador to US.

Razarumi

Sherry Rehman is an experienced legislator, activist and prior two her political career was a successful editor of a monthly magazine… tabled several progressive law drafts as a parliamentarian; champion of a free press, women's rights and freedom of information… most recently set up a think tank Jinnah Institute which has raised voice for minorities and campaigns against extremism in Pakistan.

A pragmatic democrat works through dialogue, consensus and negotiation. Establishment will not have issues with her approach.

I think @sherryrehman is a great choice. She is strong, she is smart, she is articulate and she will represent the country well. Tough assignment

tammyhaq

Of course, people are pleased its @sherryrehman not Maleeha Lodhi or Jehangir Karamat let civilian governments run the country.

murtazasolangi

So no bureaucrat, no retired General will represent Pakistan. A politician with good human rights record and an intellectual

Saba_Imtiaz

A moment of silence for Salman Bashir's dashed ambitions.

baylinveil

Interesting. Some good came out of @husainhaqqani resigning!

Manticore73

So Sherry Rehman...well at least it takes her out of the fundos sights. Sharp as a tack, she will play Washington like a harp.

AliDayan

While the military will now seek greater influence over #Pakistan's US policy, @sherryrehman- a progressive democrat will seek to temper it

mirza9

What's that I hear? That's the frantic scribbles of op-ed writers wiping the tears off the pages to replace them with exclamation marks.

sufisal

Now if we could make Marvi Memon the president & Maleeha Lodhi the prime minister life would perhaps be more bearable.
