Governance: AJK inks plan to improve transport sector

MIRPUR:

The Azad Jammu & Kashmir government has inked an integrated phased plan to improve the region’s transport and communication sectors, The Express Tribune has learnt.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the plan involves an effective phased programme for upgrading and reconditioning important highways connecting AJK with Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. It also includes construction and renovation of various inter-district roads across the territory.

During the current fiscal year, sources said, over 600-kilometre-long roads were proposed to be constructed in AJK.

Government has also decided to gear up construction work on various highways and link roads. Sources said that the government has allocated colossal funds for local government and rural development sectors.

The plan proposes the construction of at least 450 water supply schemes, buildings of 75 primary and middle schools, 700-kilometre-long roads and 25 suspension bridges. The plan will help providing safe and comfortable traveling facilities to commuters all over AJK and boost the tourism industry.
