Police said the encounter ensued near Rabiya City in Gulistan-e-Jauhar when they raided the area with the help of Asif’s companions, Zaki alias Kamran, Mohsin and Mohammad Ali Kazmi. They were arrested from the Eidgah area the same day.
Crime Branch officials said that the suspects were with the banned outfit, Mehdi Force. They confessed to being involved in sectarian violence during interrogation. Their two biggest transgressions, however, were an attack on a mosque at Sakhi Hassan in 2010 and when they threw two hand grenades at the Saudi consulate building on May 11. While no one was hurt at the consulate, five people were injured at the mosque.
“Zaki and Asif were involved in an attack on the Saudi consulate,” said SSP Farooq. “We got Zaki to phone Asif and tell him to come to Gulistan-e-Jauhar, however, Asif opened fire when he saw the police.”
SSP Awan said that Asif was shot in the abdomen when the police retaliated, and he bled out at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
When asked, SSP Awan said that there was no immediate link apparent between the murder of a Saudi diplomat in the Defence area a few days after the attack on the consulate. The suspects did not confess to the killing but they are still being questioned for any possible leads.
In their confessions, Asif and Zaki claimed to have attacked the Saudi Consulate in revenge after the Saudi government helped the Bahrain government. “Saudi Arabia sent their army to help the Sunni Bahraini government act against Bahrain’s Shia community we attacked the consulate in retaliation,” said SSP Awan quoting Zaki’s statement. Asif was driving the motorcycle while Zaki hurled the hand grenades.
An identity card claiming Asif was named Tabish Tehseen was found on his body. The police are trying to find out what his real name was as he was apparently using a fake CNIC. Three TT pistols and a rifle were also recovered from their possession.
Earlier this year in January, the Karachi police’s Special Investigation Unit arrested eight people who worked with these four suspects and recovered a huge cache of weapons. The eight men arrested initially were said to be hardcore militants of the Mehdi Force. The accused included the group’s mastermind, Tanvir Abbas.
They were accused of being involved in at least a dozen sectarian target killings, including the murder of three doctors. The group targeted sympathisers and members of the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Jesh-e-Mohammad. Their attacks always prompted a strong backlash from the groups they targeted.

@Farooq, no sect took birth in Deoband. The darululoom present here existed much before the pakistan birth.
Where is this Deoband from where this sect took the birth. India?
Does this mean they will open the road now?
These groups are made in reaction of saudi backed extremist.They have killed many shias doctor engineer.Attacked many innocents in masjid and juloos e aza. They are reactionary force.Remember second law of newton.
@Indian: not really, they were banned and were being imprisoned long before, 2001 or 2002 to be a precise guess
A word of advice for you, set your house in order first before telling others what to do. Last i checked there were over 100+ militant or separatist movements going on in india among them are the notorious saffron terror groups still openly inciting hatred..
Apparently no concept of protesting peacefully.
Instead of the usual suspects of Wahhabi/Deoband/Salafi/Sunni militant groups, it turns out these were Shia militants targeting the Saudi embassy.
Don't think committing a terrorist act on Pakistani soil against the Saudi embassy was going to help the Bahrainis much (shouldn't they actually be instead protesting or be more concerned of Saudi Arabia's funding of extremist sectarian Wahhabi inspired Madressahs that target them in Pakistan rather than Bahrainis?!). A bit hypocritical too, considering some of the Bahraini police officers, are Pakistani imports, albeit Sunni.
L-e-J and the other banned Sunni/Wahhabi/Salafi/Deoband sectarian outfits are mentioned because their extremist organizations' activists, who indulge in anti-Shia sectarian cleansing themselves, have been gunned down in targeted killings by this banned Shia group that's been caught in their on-going sectarian proxy war --- not surprisingly between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
SSP, another banned hate group, had held protests earlier and threatened the state to find their activists' killers otherwise they would commit violence during Muharram. These arrests should hopefully ease some tension...
@Abdullah: You are right, ET Please correct this news Article. It is Lashkar-e-Mehdi not LeJ. Well i wonder even if you know the difference between the two because how can you make such a blunder. Also read some history of both organizations and how they are totally opposite to each other in their goals and beliefs.
This attack was surely an act by Sipah-e-Muhammad or Lashkar-e-Mehdi. These guys have always been against Saudi Arabia and we all know the recent Iranian plot against Saudia. But LeJ is wrongly being made the media target of propaganda.
@Babur Qutab:
Imam Bargah? It says Arambagh. Learn to read properly before you criticize others.
It is not Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, it is Lashkar-e-Mehdi, correct the news item http://www.dawn.com/2011/11/20/police-arrest-criminals-involved-in-attack-on-saudi-consulate.html
God damn these animals
@Hu Jintao:
And that was after Uncle Sam got on the rear of Pakistan!! Unofficially every body inside Pakistan knows how banned that organization is! It is as banned as Taliban is officially and unofficially!! Remember Osama? He was supposed to be a terrorist as per Pakistan!
@Indian: Lashkar-e-Jhangvi is a banned militant organisation if your memory doesn't serve you. and every now and then their cult followers get caught.
@Maulana Diesel: Very wishful thinking !! These guys will make a phone call and will be released as they are your Nation's Stratigic Assets !!!
Lets kill them and hang them by the lamp posts
What goes around comes around.
A strange combination of Imam Bargah and Lashkar e Janghvi. Another example of immature reporting>
Superb news from India's point of view! A couple more of such attacks and may be the Pakistani military establishment will understand that the 'strategic assets' are turning against even the friendly Islamic countries like Saudi now which will isolate Pakistan even in the Islamic world if ever there was one called such..
Will they be released later like all those on previous occasions ?
