Muharram: IG Punjab orders police officers to be on high alert

LAHORE: Inspector General of Police (IG) Punjab Javed Iqbal has asked all police officers in the province to be on high alert during the month of Muharram to ensure its peaceful passage.

Iqbal was speaking field officers during his visit to the Sargodha and Rawalpindi regions on Saturday. He was accompanied by the sub-committee constituted by Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif.

He stressed on the RPOs, DPOs and senior police officers of both regions to plan a strategy to ensure that the month passes without any untoward incident, adding that contingency plans must also be in place.

The police chief ordered Traffic Police officers of both regions to ensure the implementation of a special traffic plan during Muharram.

CCPO presides over Muharram security meeting

Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ahmad Raza Tahir has given an order that no police official is to leave their duty till the dispersal of the last person from Muharram majalis and processions. He was presiding over a high-level meeting held in connection with Muharram at Police Lines Qilla Gujjar Singh in Lahore. DIG Operations Ghulam Mehmood Doar, SSP Operations Shaukat Abbas, all Divisional SPs, more than 100 Shia Ulema and license holders participated in the meeting.

Tahir also directed the timely arrival of policemen to duty points and ordered an effective pick and drop service, along with the provision of edibles and clean drinking water.

The CCPO said that Lahore Police would work in coordination with the Ulema, public representatives, other related departments and agencies to ensure that there is comprehensive security at religious processions and places.

He said that rooftop deployment will be carried out at imam bargahs, majalis places and on procession routes.

Tahir said that more than 12,000 policemen will provide security to cover 4,000 majalis and 640 processions. He said that 134 mobile squads, 85 motorbikes, 75 cars, 11 Elite Force vehicles would also be deployed.

Lahore Police will also provide security cover to 297 imam bargahs and 787 mosques on the routes of the processions. He added that 1,068 members of the District Peace Committee will also be present on procession routes and strict enforcement of the Loud Speaker Ordinance will also be ensured.
