Memogate: truth or fiction? (III)

Letter November 18, 2011
Husain Haqqani did not do anything wrong, it was his duty to do what he was asked to do.

BAYONNE, NJ, US: It seems my beloved compatriots can’t understand a simple case. Husain Haqqani did not do anything wrong, it was his duty to do what he was asked to do. Haqqani is not going to stop drone attacks and he isn’t the one who allowed the Americans to conduct them. That was given by the military and no one can deny that.

As for treason, let’s not fool ourselves. Article 6 of the Constitution talks of treason and that means subverting the Constitution. So we should ask ourselves which individual or institution has done that most often in Pakistan’s history? Who or which institution allows the US to carry out drone attacks inside Pakistani territory? Who or which institution facilitated the release of Raymond Davis?

If we have the knowledge, insight and the courage to answer these questions honestly and correctly we will be able to see that, while badly executed, bringing the military under an elected civilian government is a prerequisite for a functioning democracy.
