India's normally breathless television news channels only made passing reference to the birth, however, keeping to an agreement among broadcasters to restrain their reporting of the family's private life. Former Miss World Rai Bachchan, 38, gave birth at the private Seven Hills Hospital in Mumbai, hospital staff told AFP.
"IT'S A GIRL!," Abhishek, 35, wrote on his Twitter account, @juniorbachchan, without giving any further details. Bachchan's father, Bollywood legend Amitabh, tweeted his joy at the new arrival:
"A dada ji (a grandfather)...Ecstatic!", calling his new granddaughter "the cutest baby girl". Amitabh is already a grandfather as his daughter, Shweta Nanda, has two children. Media coverage of the event was muted even though Rai Bachchan and her husband are top stars and, along with Amitabh and his actress wife Jaya, are considered to be Bollywood's "royal family".
Bachchan senior -- a compulsive blogger and tweeter -- has had a prickly relationship with the media in the past and has criticised outlets that misrepresent him or intrude on his family's privacy.
Last week broadcasters reportedly agreed on an unprecedented series of measures, including not to trail the event in advance or even run the announcement on "breaking news" captions.
News channels, which are normally highly competitive, all appeared to be toeing the line by avoiding rolling coverage of the birth, although it was mentioned in brief.
Outside broadcast vans were not sent to Bachchan's home or the hospital, while astrology shows, which are popular in India to forecast future fortunes, have also reportedly been ruled off-limits. Instead, it was left to the Internet for fans to wish the Bachchans well as congratulations poured in via Twitter, with #BabyB quickly trending among Indian users of the micro-blogging site. Among fellow celebrities, Bollywood director and family friend Karan Johar wrote:
"Congratulations!! Baby B had a baby girl!!... am sure she will be the prettiest girl ever!!!"
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan took the Miss World crown in 1994 and made her debut in Bollywood in the late 1990s. She has since gone on to star in more than 40 Indian films.
She was most recently seen in the South Indian film blockbuster "Endhiran" (Robot) with the Tamil-language superstar Rajinikanth, which broke box office records in India.
She has also appeared as a jewel thief in Steve Martin's "The Pink Panther 2". Her other English-language films include "Bride and Prejudice" (2004), by "Bend It Like Beckham" director Gurinder Chadha, and "The Last Legion" (2007).
Before her pregnancy was announced, she was at this year's Cannes film festival to promote her latest project "Heroine".
Filming had been due to start this year but in June its producers said the movie had been put on hold because of the pregnancy.

Big B, Junior B, now baBy, is this the first one to be born on earth? Or the last one? Every year, every month, every day, every hour, every minutes, every seconds, babies are born...
@Noor: Oh come on Noor Mian, we all know how much Pakistanis love our movies and celebrities. Whats wrong in reporting the news of the beloved personalities by ET?
New born baby will also become a actress ( she may suck at that just like her mother, who cares) like most celeb kids in India, she may star in Robot part 5 in 2035 opposite to Rajnikanth.
good wishes for the little cutiest baby. Allah bless her ... ... ... . very very congratulation to bachachan's family.
:-@rabbi- u should first think that a woman is a creator .all of us r born from a woman ......................u should not comment like that on a baby girl. proved urself an uneducated.... cheap person ...........
@ bachchan family.... very very comgratulations....... good wishes for the little cutiest baby.god bless her ............
Is this baby born to Pakistan's first lady?
It seems so from the kind of hype over this created by Pakistani media.
Obviously she could only give birth to a baby and not an adult ;)
Come on media, have a heart and calm down; analyse the significance of news before hyping.
@rabbi: so u too are among those typical people along with typical thinking about proudness with baby boys ... shame on u . its a gift of God . whether its a girl or a boy, it never counts
Boy or Girl. Any baby is God's gift. Please don't be biased towards boys.
Good for them. Whats in it for us?
Congratulations to the Bachchan Family, may god bless their family.
For those who cannot say anything good about such a happy occasion, its best not to comment at all.We are all god's children and we must appreciate each soul.
Have a great day all :) and may everyone's life be filled with joy.
Asalam Alekum how are u aish and abhi very very congrates for your baby wish u all the very very best

Congratulations to Bachchan Family. Its a shame for Rabbi who writes such a cheap remarks about having a girl.Girls or boys they all are gift from God.One should not forget that first Prime Minister of India was Mrs.Indira Gandhi who was girl too and Lata,Asha and many more, even Aishwariya Rai's mother was also a woman.God bless baby Bachchan always.

Rabi and the 14 recommenders(?) need to be sent back in stoneage in the land of dessert.
And why is this news in Pakistan? Who cares if they had a baby or not?
Congrats!!:) to abhi+ash,dada and dadi.
Congrats !! Abhi+ash, dada, dadi. Little angle will make u all happy. God bless her.
@rabbi: Rabbi Mian, Sorry to say but I wonder if you realize that you are being very disrespectful to all the women in your own family!
ish the bacchan family fr their sweet babygirl……………beautiful moms should definetly hav daughters to make the world sweeter Recommend3
This Rabbi guy can stick his patriarchal views where the sun don't shine. Aishwarya Rai is brilliant and beautiful - India (and the world) needs more women with her genes. Congratulations to the new mother. I can't wait till the day I have my own baby daughter so I can raise her with the strength to achieve, and to laugh at Rabbi and his likes.
wish the bacchan family fr their sweet babygirl...............beautiful moms should definetly hav daughters to make the world sweeter
congrats and good wishes... @rabbi: please dont spoil the special occasion by such outdated thoughts!!
this should be headlines news.
@Rabbi your comments echo the views of the the people of pre Islamic Arabia.
Such a pity that people like "rabbi" think they should have had a girl. Abhishek is happy with his daughter & they are setting the right example by showing people like you that boy children are not more valuable than girl children. God blessed them with a girl and they are content.Who are you to think "it should have been a boy"?
Thanks God baby is out. Else its been many months the newspaper and channels are eating our head like if it is the first baby to come to this world :P
@rabbi, How do you say its much better if they had a boy . As a girl herself how beautiful she is and great achievements aishwarya has made of herself and why dont you think her daughter can also become like that?
I wish d baby long life and sound health
