Gilani proposes plan for establishing university named after Guru Nanak

LAHORE:

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani discussed the establishment of a university named after Guru Nanak in a bid to empower minority communities in the country.

The idea was discussed in a meeting between the prime minister and pilgrims of the Sikh community in Lahore.

Prominent at the gathering was the topic of the establishment of a university in Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of founder of the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak.

Dr Pritpal Singh, Convener of the American Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, expressed his pleasure at the enthusiasm shown by Gilani to set things in motion for the university.

The American Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee is an organisation that looks after Sikh places of worship.

The work on the university is slated to be arranged by the Evacuee Trust Property Board, the organisation that looks after the affairs of minority properties and places of worship in Pakistan.

The news seems ridiculous to me. Every year, whosoever is in the PM chair, promises like this with the sikh pilgrims but then there is nothing practical and factual for the university establishment.

Making and running universities is not a child's play but, at least in the case of this university, it looks like that.

As a resident of Nankana Sahib, I do not find anything practical being done for the university overhere.

Its a country of 180 million people and majority are poor & illiterate .. and easily misled by those individuals who would do any thing for their vested interest. The solution in long run is to educated the populace and control the over population ... while in short run easy way out is to educate all minorities, which is a lot easier than educating the majority, which will enable them to serve in different departments and organizations where they can not only influence the policy but also will have their say in all matters and will give them more exposure in the society thus will develop a healthy and progressive society.
