Taking advantage of the lull, I tried to meet as many MNAs as was possible before I began trying to meet the deadline of this column. My sole objective was to find out their reaction and possible game plan for dealing with the “Tsunami” that Imran Khan is presumed to have unleashed by addressing a mammoth crowd in Lahore on October 30.
After talking to nearly a dozen of MNAs, representing all possible shades of our political spectrum, I beg to report that our usual legislators didn’t appear much pushed. Fairly a good number rather expressed disdainful cynicism by pointing out names that are joining Imran Khan in droves.
A son of Raja George Sikandar Zaman from Khanpur/Taxila is the latest addition. He is scion of a family that remained fiercely loyal to the British and always relished ministerial slots, whenever a military dictator was in absolute control.
Some people I talked to also kept wondering as to why the Imran-inspired youth with digital reach should employ its accumulated vigour to re-launch tried and tested products like Mian Azhar of Lahore; that too as the neat, clean and fresh faces. The long queue of usual suspects of our power games to seek blessings of Imran Khan, in a way, reinforces the inherent tenacity of our elite.
For over five thousand years this wretched land of Indus has been exposed to various invasions, both from within and outside. After initial resistance, the status-quo empowering elite would eventually get adjusted to new rulers to keep the average Joe in fate driven submission. With all reservations and my incurable cynicism, I always felt strongly that Imran Khan would take a long time to accept such elitist characters. To my utter shock, he didn’t wait for more than two weeks. Life has surely turned fast-paced in this age of virtual reality.
Imran Khan-driven hysteria might be subsiding by adjusting to realpolitik, but such adjustments make media boring, especially the electronic one which is all about drama, tension and dazzling spectacles. Probably to fill the expected void on this front, General Pervez Musharraf, is getting jittery these days.
I have it from highly reliable sources that for the past four days, his close aides are being subjected to a massive dose of tantrums by the former president -cum -chief of army staff. The retired general wants to advance the date of his much-announced landing in Pakistan. Instead of taking a plane for Pakistan on March 23, 2012, he now wants to come here on December 25, 2011.
My sources claim that the former president started having fits on this count after the Lahore rally of Imran Khan. He seriously believes that after taking over in October 12, 1999 he cultivated a strong constituency amongst the upwardly mobile urbanites of Pakistan. Besides promising “no Nawaz Sharif; no Benazir,” he also generated a feel-good mood for these classes by triggering appearances of vigorous economic activity. His “enlightened moderation” provided some “ideological moorings” as well. General
Musharraf, it is reported, keeps insisting that urbanite pockets in Pakistan are excitedly waiting for his return and if he delays the promised landing, a hard and significant chunk of his potential constituency will cross over to Imran Khan.
Begum Sehba Musharraf was in town recently. That usually quiet, lie low but elegantly engaging lady has been holding a series of meetings with many of those, serving and retired, who really matter when it comes to power management in this country. No one told Begum Sahiba in categorical terms that her husband should forget returning to Pakistan and that he should forget about his political plans. But without any exceptions they pointed out to ‘clear and forceful’ dangers to his security. Begum Sahiba honestly conveyed these fears to her husband but that provoked the commando in him to become even more adamant. We have to wait for his final decision, though the electronic media would love to have him around in the anticipated post-tsunami silence.

@A.Khan:
Great observation. Why didn't the author think of that? It completely undermines his argument!
I would like to say only one thing. Imran khan may be the most sincere politician in pakistan. but he has left the path of his commitments and that were not to bring old faces. I agree with Nusrat sahib " Old wine in a new botle". I cant understand that how come imran khan could not find new faces. Most of the perople who are the supporters of Imran khan are because of they want to see new faces, they want to try new balls and new wickets. If this is not going to happen then Imran kahan will be going back to london after elections .
Wine tastes best when aged appropriately. In this case more than 15 years and counting.
old is gold
The cancer hospital was not a an old wine in a new bottle. It was a pioneering feat for Pakistan. And who bombed the hospital. Was it not when Ms. Bhutto was in power. Both Ms Bhutto and Mr. Sharif long thought he was a threat. They both also wouldn't allow him to do any funding appeals for the hospital using PTV-which then was only game in town. yes and why didn't they free the media. Why did a General have to do it. You have to be better than a General when in power, not worse! By the way I read a public survey about local government (done in 2008) in a paper published by a US org..It revealed the people supported elected local government.
Yesterday, IK said he wants reconciliation with MQM. It reminded me of his words and stance for MQM in 2007. IK we have short memories but not that short sir.
Remember Ms. Nusrat. The older the wine, the better it tastes.
I cannot believe this loser PTI party is getting so much press
@ R Khan. so you only remeber the Kashmir part in that 40 minute speech. PTI said that they will field 1000 candidates in the next general elections. These old politicians hardly make 5% of that. You can not have young candidates in rural areas. I was watching SANA BUCHA show (Lekin) and when she visited some rural area in Sindh, people thought she was BENAZIR. PTI will field young candidates in cities and old candidates in rural areas. simple. Yes, people have the right to criticize if PTI give tickets to CORRUPT politicians.
and got stale during changing of the bottle.
Now is Tribune a declared "Pro Nawaz" paper?
@A.Khan: Except old wine starts losing its high quality selling traits once it is opened for the first time, let alone moved to another bottle.
I am scared to even commenting now as per chance my comment will be pronouced as "maan bhen ki gaalian" on Live TV Shows. I had stopped watching his program not becuase of the content but becuase of his attitude and yesterday I dared to watch it again and lo behold...he was cursing (and sending laannat) becuase he refused to make himself a target for some religous nut case. Though in the same program, just 10 minutes ago when a caller called him to define the role of Establishment, Mr Javed said, "oh bhai mujehy ghar bhi jana hey". For Allah sake stop this nonsense.
Just two questions to Mr Javed and Mr. Minhas:
If we take IK/PTI out from the current politcal landscape, do you, both intellectuals, have any other alternative you would like to propose to change this status-quo. What both of you have ever done to this nation and its people BEYOND your own personal interest.Pls, I beg of you, you have resources, you have an outreach, pls leave an inspring legacy so that your name would always be remebered as someone who contributed in building this nation.
@Saad Duraiz:
do you have something to prove this 'delusional' statement?
@Noor:
I totally agree with Noor... The one and only solution for Pakistan is Khilafat !!!!
What are you interested in, old wine or new bottle?
@Falcon: Rightly said! The criticizers do not have any alternative. It's not their fault, its difficult to match the credibility and characteristics of Imran Khan.
Every game in life is played with the cards in the hand rather than cards sitting in heaven somewhere. Jamshed Iqbal Cheema (Agriculture's renowned expert) and Waleed Iqbal (Allama Iqbal's grand son - Harvard Law School Graduate) also joined recently;it would have been great to see their names mentioned in your analysis as well. The day our critics rise up and lead this nation, I would be more than happy to follow them. Till then, I am sticking to the best alternative available and that is PTI!
Imran Khan is selling old wine in new bottle, no doubt about it! IK does not have leadership qualities which are needed in today's world. Winning Cricket World Cup & to run this country is all together different. We need a leader who not only being honest should be educated & have an eye to see world affair & how to deal with them. Imran Khan with his limited IQ & EQ would bring us at a head on collision path with Western countries. He is one of those politicians, those kids are being educated abroad & who in order to keep himself busy wants to indulge in national politics. Mark my words, if God forbid he comes in power, he will destroy Pakistan. If you listen to his Minto Park speech, it seemed that it was written at ISI head quarters since it had nothing new to offer except the same old receipts i.e. self determination for Kashmiris, etc.
@Shahzada: Why would you need old/experienced politiciancs if you wanted a revolution of change.
Well thats the best combination 'old wine in new bottle' :) the older the wine the better it taste.
@Noor: keep dreaming
I would advice Mr Nusrat to watch the following video about PTI electrol candidates
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmOV-GXTaUk
Everyone is welcomed...after truth and reconcilliation...!
what about PCO judges ?
If Imran khan has to go by the book of our intellectual and their advises the one possible thing that he should finally be doing is to "bang his head on a wall".
He cannot win because he has no winning candidates,when now he is getting them ,again ,what the heck is he doing ?
So what should he really do,,,?
Re Dreamer: Don't forget Imran's track record, he's honest and his integrity has remained uncompromising. What he's proposing and hopefully will implement will itself sift the bad ones joining with this tide. Imagine if he starts refusing people and passing judgements on who to be accepted or not ? My dear let's not forget "Fateh-e-Makka"....
@Anti-Truth: If someone wants to face the moment of truth, why not to let it happen..? I add to ask, if pure like Jinnah not joining...should Jazi be also refused...? Let's not live in hell forever..be a human...I mean Ashraful Makhluqaat...
We need a leader having Islamic morals, and that's nothing to feel guilty(as it mostly happens all over the world), as the best Governance examples in the history have been by honest Muslim leaders, e.g, The Rashidun.
Just Financial honesty is not enough; we need the leadership having clear mind about having interest free banking, immunity to none, and ready to implement the divine laws (and not here to make their own laws).
Even if IK declares above intention and works for it honestly, I guarantee him success in this world & hereafter.
Mind you, all liberals out there; Islam is the greatest call out for rights of women, minorities and doesn't disturb such Non-Muslims who want to live in peace. But it does ask Muslims to live with dignity and respond boldly to those who try to harm Muslims.
@Shahzada: Without criticizing Imran too much, I do feel that the inclusion of a large number of turncoats, and the same corrupt people into PTI has let down some of his supporters. As for the rationalization that you have to work with what you have....that same reason was given by Musharraf when he forced the Chaudhry brothers, Wasi Zafar, and the like on us. If your entire campaign is based on getting rid of old faces, you should have stayed true to it.
In addidtion to what Hamid Shahid has said above, Nusrat sb., would you please indicate some names that you approve to join PTI ? As rightly said by Imran Khan himself recently, " Kiya mien Sweden se ploiticians laoun ju PTI join kerien" ?
Quad e Azam used to be in congress for many years before joining Muslim League. Was he an old wine in a new bottle? Financial honesty should be the one and only criteria and everything else should of least importance. If you go into details of who belonged to which party in the past then everything becomes too complex and confused. Secondly, leaving a party in power and joining a party who has never been into power corridors cannot be called floor crossing. Floor crossing is exactly the opposite of this.
