FAISALABAD: Farmers should use extracts prepared from various plants for treatment of sick animals against parasites as these plants have the capability to tackle disease.

This was disclosed by a team of livestock experts at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), headed by Dr Rao Zahid Abbas and including Dr Zafar Iqbal and Dr Ziauddin Sindhu.

They said the livestock sector was playing a vital role in the economy, which contributed 53.2 per cent to agricultural value addition and 11.4 per cent to the gross domestic product in 2009-10.

They suggested that the farmers should provide proper and on-time treatment against different diseases which attack the animals and reduce their production.

They said the livestock sector was at risk of a decline in production due to presence of certain diseases. Parasites affect animals of all ages and clinical signs include diarrhoea, anorexia, weight loss, decrease in productivity and eventuaslly, death.

According to these experts, “most effective method to control parasites is the use of synthetic drugs. These drugs minimise pasture contamination due to their ability to control egg laying stages of adult parasites. Though synthetic drugs are very effective to cure diseases.”
