Justice Sheikh Ahmad Farooq of the Lahore High Court on Thursday issued notice to the chief secretary and prosecution secretary for two weeks on a petition challenging the appointment of Ashtar Ausaf Ali as prosecutor general of Punjab.
The petitioner, Advocate Arif Kareem, submitted that the Public Prosecution Department had interviewed 48 candidates for the post of prosecutor general, but Ali was not one of them. He said that Ali’s appointment was not based on merit and rules, but on political grounds, which was a violation of the law and the Constitution. The petition earlier came up for hearing before Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed on November 2, but the judge recused himself.
