ISTANBUL:

Petra Kvitova let her racket do the talking as the fast-rising Czech backed up her shock Wimbledon victory by winning the WTA Championships on her first attempt, beating Belarussian Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

With the Australian Open on the horizon, Kvitova could find herself with a chance of becoming the world number one early next year. However, the Czech said that she is not thinking of toppling Caroline Wozniacki off the number one spot.

“I’m not thinking like that,” she said. “I’ve had a great tournament and it’s huge. But I’m number two and the next season will be different. I’ll actually be the favourite all the time. It’ll be really strange for me. It’ll be something new.”

Azarenka, on the other hand, was disappointed at her show in the final.

“I think I didn’t step it up,” she said. “She played well, but I could’ve done better.”

Kvitova prevailed in a two-hour 28-minute match with her hard-serving, flat-hitting style being consistent enough to impose itself on Azarenka’s slightly less potent qualities.
