Of braids, bangs and bun: Hair me out

KARACHI:

The days when your mane looks like a Cuban sailor’s unruly beard are here. It’s that time of the year when God receives most prayers from women, requesting to make them bald so that they can escape the additional agony of taming their respective tresses. However, there are certain hairdos and hair accessories that can add that glam quotient to your ensemble and can save you from looking a bit too Halloween friendly.

Braids

There is nothing more practical, romantic and easy-to-do than all kinds of braided hairstyles. Braids and braided head buns make you look like a character from a rose tinted Jane Austen novel. Braids have been adopted and reinvented in every wave of fashion the world has come across. From Grecian goddesses to the contemporary supermodels, every woman has tried to twist and turn braids to create their respective signature looks. Besides, milkmaid braids and side-swept, overlapping braid hairstyles are also making a comeback this season.

Bangs and buns

Dead straight, blunt bangs have made a comeback this season. All those women (and men) with prominent foreheads can breathe out as the most natural remedy for forehead related issues is in style again. However, this 50’s-inspired, eyelash-grazing hairstyle isn’t for the faint of upkeep — bangs require a lot of trims — yet, it’s already a favourite look in the cool crowd, as we’ve spotted various interpretations on many fashion favorites like Kate Moss and Sandra Bullock. Pair your bangs with an effortless bun and you are ready to look edgier than average. Everything from sleek ballerina buns and voguish twists to messy top knots are in fashion this season. Thus if you want to get a feminine look, an updo is exactly what you need. Opt for deep-side swept hairstyle a la Chanel or Sonya Rykiel if you are a fan of old Hollywood glamour.

Ponytails

From actors gracing the red carpet to the ramps of high-end designers, humble ponytail was the hairstyle of the season, with everyone from Marc Jacobs to Christopher Kane and Gucci in the West and Sania Maskatiya in East, pulling hair high up on the catwalk. Strict, clean, simple, natural — all these words describe your shortest route to fighting frizz with a bit of glamour in the chilly season. Remember height and slickness determines the kind of look you want to portray. The higher and the neater your pony is, the more it will give you a dominatrix sort of a look. Amp up the volume around the crown area and avoid letting your hair fall flat.

Hats off to you!

If none of the above mentioned hairstyles give you the look you are trying to achieve, opt for a cool beanie or even a sophisticated beret to immediately add a Parisian or casual coolness to your outfit. Avoid caps if you are not that much into unisex fashion and choose hats and feminine slouchy baker boy hats that make you stand out by transporting your look to another era or country.
