Appetite is growing for polls in the city of eight million, Pakistan's second biggest and the capital of the most populous province Punjab, which commands the most number of seats in the national parliament.
That makes it bitterly contested political territory where opposition leaders are holding major rallies targeting the unpopular Zardari and trying to whip up votes for the future.
Chief among them is former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, whose Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) party controls Punjab and is the main opposition party at a national level. He is expected to draw large crowds at a rally on Friday.
"Join the protest rally on 28th October against costly electricity, power cuts and the worst corruption," read banners strung up by PML-N throughout the city.
"Come to change your destiny, come to save the country from looters and plunderers," chant party activists through public address systems.
Disillusionment is high with the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) that swept to power on a five-year ticket in February 2008, two months after Zardari's wife, ex-prime minister Benazir Bhutto, was assassinated.
On Monday, a man committed suicide by self-immolation outside the federal parliament in the capital Islamabad.
On Wednesday, a man in his 70s died after waiting all night to collect his pension from tardy bank officials, triggering outrage in the media.
Pakistan's Human Rights Commission accused the government of callous apathy in the face of such desperation.
"This apathy is giving way to violent behaviour in society and the people are increasingly keen to launch vociferous protests in the hope that their plight would be noticed by someone," it said.
In Lahore, the malaise has been compounded by an unprecedented outbreak of dengue fever, infecting more than 16,000 and killing more than 248 people.
It is that anger that the PML-N is hoping to tap into by calling for early elections, which most observers now predict some time in the autumn of 2012.
"There are only two options -- seeing the anger in the people, it (the government) should quit and call fresh elections, or the people should come out and send them packing," senior PML-N leader Zafar Ali Shah told AFP.
"Allowing this government any more time is equivalent to suicide."
Interior minister and PPP loyalist Rehman Malik hit back, telling reporters that as the ruling party in Punjab, the PML-N was as corrupt as anyone else.
"They are not going to achieve anything from such protests. Being the government of the largest province Punjab, which is 52 percent of Pakistan, they have a major part in corruption," Malik told reporters.
Pervez Malik, a PML-N MP from Lahore, claimed 150,000 to 200,000 people were expected to join the rally on Friday and that "Zardari will have no option but to bow before the will of people and step down".
An irritant for Sharif and Zardari is cricket hero turned politician, Imran Khan, holding his own rally on Sunday at the Minar-e-Pakistan ground where the resolution for the creation of Pakistan was adopted on March 23, 1940.
"Throw out this government and save the country," is his campaign slogan. His Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) (Movement for Justice) party boycotted the 2008 election but seems confident about its prospects.
"God willing we will have a very big political gathering on Sunday. People are coming from different cities to attend and mostly youth are supporting us," Khan's senior vice president Hamid Khan told AFP.
Khan announced on Thursday that PTI would be holding a walk towards Parliament House on Friday too, after mid-day prayers, against drone strikes.
On Thursday, around 400 people, joined the "Save Pakistan rally" called by pop singer Ibrarul Haq in downtown Lahore to present his development agenda to resolve unemployment, power cuts and corruption.
"Live or die, we have to save Pakistan," and "Revolution, revolution," chanted the mostly young people, holding up Pakistani white and green flags.
But the commotion drew a sarcastic response from one onlooker who asked an AFP reporter: "Excuse me, whose turn is it today of saving Pakistan?"
Elsewhere in Lahore, Mohammad Rizwan, 25, shrugged as he cleaned cars for small change: "These rallies are not going to feed my family or save me from dengue," he said.

@Bhatti: Nawaz Sharif never gave any such statement.
@Abdul Rahman Khan: He never used any such statment. If he will say even one time I will be the first one to hate him although I am Punjabi. I love him because he love Pakistan and Love all the people of Pakistan equally.
@Nirvan: why are you jalous of it. India don't even have one real friend. Pakistan could be one but India is playing in the hands of those who see India as their biggest buyer of arms and other army stuff.
@ Talha habib Now theres a nice strawman.
Imran Khan’s discourse revolves around a few rhetorical sentences. The most frequently heard is that all other politicians are corrupt and therefore he deserves to be the leader of Pakistan. Who can disagree with the need for rule of law, accountability and transparency? He is however often thin on details about the specifics of his policy. His oft-repeated magical solution is that politicians should declare their assets. Of course, not only politicians but all asset holders should make correct declarations, not just for greater cleanliness in politics but also for working out correct tax liabilities. However, Imran fails to appreciate the fact that corruption is multifaceted and a simplistic solution obscures the need for a more long term multi-dimensional eradication strategy. Contrary to the conventional generalisation, empirical research in an IMF paper shows that a strong positive correlation between the traditional governance features and economic growth of the developing countries is not established. The analysis reveals that while governance and anti-corruption are good ideals to pursue, there are other capacity and institution building factors that largely define a country’s ability to sustain high economic growth. It is, therefore, important to note that a government of angels alone will not necessarily usher in an era of economic development. How our country interacts with the international community is equally important.
Vote for Imran Khan. It is time.

This is the first time in my life I am going to attend a political jalsa on the 30th. Me and 40 of my friends will go there to show our support to the most sincere, most honest and most courageous politician of pakistan. God bless him
@SaudiRules: Just like ur name Nawaz Shareef is a Saudi stooge. Nawaz Shareef is loosing his vote bank in punjab due to bad performance in punjab. No need for other parties to break his vote bank. Today evey party is exposed by the independent media of pakistan.
Its time for IK ....... need not testing these two Sharifs any more
Pakistanis are in the habit of waxing poetic about the superlative qualities of China-Pakistan bonhomie; Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has publicly described the friendship as being “higher than mountains, deeper than oceans, stronger than steel, and sweeter than honey.” Pray very hard indeed. The pak-china duet is very shallow and likely to falter very fast.
@Abdul Rahman Khan: No one buys that Jaag Punjabi jaag!! & you too get your facts STRAIGHT He Still Have Seats in 5 KPK Assembly & NA seats too. he has seats from Balochistan.
I keep hearing this statement "who will be next to save Pakistan" , We need a Leader more than a Saviour to bring Pakistan into the 21st century.
My vote is for IK. The entire nation's youth is with him to oust corrupt Zardari and Sharif
Time for Change Time to stand for country Lets all stand with the MAN who is daring, who can stand against the corrupt systems. My self, my family and friends all are going to vote for Imran Khan for the first time in the history.
Wake up people before its too late.
Vote for PTI Vote for better future Long Live Pakistan
@3footninja: Corruption is a very complex phenomena, for which just an honest individual sitting at the top does little to solve. It is all about incentives, and in a dysfunctional state there is very little incentives. The fact that you would rather offer emotive statements to claim that IK will bring an end to corruption, shows that either he is not managing expectations or you are extremely optimistic. If you talk about accountability, will IK hold the military to account for its commercial affairs? Will land grabs which have helped develop DHA's across the country ever be looked into? The only corruption that PTI is interested in is that which is linked to political figures. Which probably true, just shows that it is a rallying cry and political oppourtunism. There is no inclination to bring about accountability in the most powerful and well resourced parts of the state. Therefore, its all rhetoric, but I will be more than happy to be proved wrong, if and when the time comes.
@Realist. Sorry to say Nawaz is less pakistani and more punjabi politrician. Remember his vote-catch slogan 'Jaag punjabi jaaq - teri pugg noon lag gaya daagh'. In the last general elections, he didn't have any seat at all in Sind, KP and Baluchistan. By putting sindhi cap on head you only exploit the ignorant masses of Sind land trading on their miseries. He manouvres to grab power to multiply his industrial empire. He buys political support from other political parties. Remember, he paid Rs. 40 crores to MQM for its support in sind in his last government. So, BYE BYE NAWAZ AND WELCOME TO THE NEW HOPE - IMRAN KHAN.
Hello, i never thought of giving vote before, but now i think the the future of our country depend's on us. I will definetly vote for Imran khan. No ppp, No pml N... even i ain't ready to give them shoe...
Display of nonsense in a denguefied city.
Dear IK Supporters. It is time to join PTI in Jalsa on 30th Oct. I have never attended any such gathering ever in my life, but the Charisma of IK's honesty is forcing me to attend his gathering. Let us show the older generation that we are not only the net worms, but we can come out on streets too and physically can support and express our opinion. Let us mute the columnists and the political pundits who lable PTI (read honest Pakistanis) is election spoiler. Let us show them that we are the winners and they are the spoilers (read losers). Come and let us show the status-quo that we shall strive till we rise. If Lahore Jalsa is successful, PTI will spread all over the Pakistan. Let us be the first drops in this revolutionary rain. Let us come out and show the world. This opportunity will never bounce back....get it. Come out. Join PTI. I DO IT WITH MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
Yeah Wake Up Pakistan Wake up [2] Don't go for rhetoric of Imran khan, You're going to help PPP by supporting Imran khan.
@Realist.: The only national party is PPP whether you like it or not. The current PML is just a provincial party.
@Murad: Imran has no real agenda or manifesto. He just makes motherhood and apple pie statements. He is not an electable commodity and does not enjoy support of the masses. He is supposedly a westernized liberal, but panders to the right wing fundamentalists. With a foot in both camps, he will lose whatever little credibility he has with both sides.
Taliban Khan Sahab suppose you win the election than who will be your finance minster...umer cheema? dr alvi? dr mazari? Bhai where is the team? There is a difference than leading Pakistan and managing a cricket team or shaukat khanum hospital.
@Nadir: 6 out of 9 things in your list directly or indirectly stem from corruption and lack of accountability. If you're smart enough you'll realize the link between the two. And PTI is the only party that is capable of bringing these much needed reforms.
“Allowing this government any more time is equivalent to suicide.” Interior minister and PPP loyalist Rehman Malik hit back, telling reporters that as the ruling party in Punjab, the PML-N was as corrupt as anyone else.
Like PPP you mean?
Can anybody tell me how to register for the votes? I received a message by ECP that they would come door to door for registration purposes but none came till now. Do i visit NADRA or what? I would really appreciate it if anyone could help.
“These rallies are not going to feed my family or save me from dengue,” he said.
The only method to remove Mr. Zardari or his government is through constitutional process. Any other move will bring anarchy which could result in army or Taliban take over. If Zardari is removed without adopting constitutional process, then he has every right to defend himself and use any method to curb this unconstitutional, unlawfull movement. This is not Libya, Tunisia or Egypt. This is Pakistan, a democracratic country, ruled by elected representatives.
imran khan zindabad this is the first time in my life i am going to attend any jalsa and that will be for pti and imran khan becuase i think he is an honest person who realy wants to bring change in pakistan
Wake Up Pakistan. Wake Up
3footninja: global energy, commodity and food prices are going to come down just because "rule of law" is maintained? if only things were so simple.
@Bhatti: HE IS a National leader. He visits sindh he visits Balochistan he visits KPK too. He had government in Sindh KPK & Balochistan too in his last term. get your facts straight first.
PPP & PML are two national parties.
I m with Imran Khan...
@Nadir: These things will automatically follow once you enforce rule-of-law and accountability at the top. Its really not rocket science y'know...
The time comes to change PAKISTAN politics from corrupt LEADERS. Lets pray.
The nation should understand that such chances are very rare. We should get rid of status quo and support Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. VOTE FOR PTI
PTI all the way! IK, the nation stands united behind you. About time to send the rest packing..
Now if only the change of individual faces in government could magically increase electricity output, reduce oil prices, increase tax receipts, increase exports, reduce inflation, bring an end to terrorism and crime, bring the military to conform with its constitutional role, stop your local policeman from asking a bribe, stop electricity theft etc. Pakistan is facing multiple challenges, and how do political rallies calling for the deposition of the government solve anything? All this does is to set a bad precedent so that when the PPP is in opposition it can do the exact same thing 5 years from now. And why does the PML N have to hold rallies? It has seats in parliment, get rid of the government through a vote of no confidence?
