Society’s double standards

July 16, 2010

KARACHI: This is with reference to Riffat Hassan’s “Modesty not segregation” (July 16). For men in our country, the length of a woman’s dress seems to be a national obsession. Commanding women to cover themselves from head to toe, the men in our society use religion as a powerful tool to cloak their misogyny. Our society has wrongly put the onus of honour in a family with the females of the family. Men can get away with anything, but if a woman so much as looks at a man she isn’t related to, she shames the family. I wonder when our society’s hypocrisy and double standards will end.
