Land of holidays

Letter October 25, 2011
Can anyone explain what benefit this holiday provided to the family of the late Nusrat Bhutto?

KARACHI: October 24th was declared a national holiday to mourn the death of Begum Nusrat Bhutto. This meant that students at schools and colleges lost yet another day. Banks were also closed and this became another inconvenience, since they had already been closed for two days.

I had to go to a National Savings Centre and when I went the next day the crowd was three times the normal for the first day of the week. Can anyone explain what benefit this holiday provided to the family of the late Nusrat Bhutto? What it did do however was that it made life more miserable for many of us.

Also, I could not understand why schools were given a holiday. Most children I know were happy to be home, playing games and watching television. They have no idea who Nusrat Bhutto was.
