“He (Qaddafi) has just been buried now in the desert along with his son,” National Transitional Council (NTC) commander Abdel Majid Mlegta told Reuters by telephone.
Qaddafi’s cleric, Khaled Tantoush, who was captured with him, prayed over the rotting bodies before they were taken from the compound in the coastal city of Misrata, where they had been on show, and handed to two NTC loyalists for burial, he said.
The NTC had worried many outsiders by displaying the corpses in a meat locker in the fiercely anti-Qaddafi city of Misrata until their decaying state forced them on Monday to call a halt.
Under pressure from Western allies, the NTC promised the same day to investigate how Qaddafi and his son were killed.
Mobile phone footage shows both alive after their capture. The former leader was seen being mocked, beaten and abused before he died, in what NTC officials say was crossfire.
The saga has made Western allies of Libya’s interim leadership queasy about the prospects for the rule of law and stable government in the post-Qaddafi era.
Determined to prevent Qaddafi’s grave from becoming a shrine for his supporters, the NTC wants to keep its location secret, refusing custody to his tribe, many of whom live in Sirte.
The prayers for the dead were attended by two of Qaddafi’s cousins, Mansour Dhao Ibrahim, once leader of the feared People’s Guard, and Ahmed Ibrahim. Both were captured with him after a NATO air strike hit a convoy of vehicles trying to break out of Sirte, Qaddafi’s hometown, just after it fell.
One of Qaddafi’s sons, the enigmatic Saif al-Islam, remains on the run. Once viewed as a moderate reformer, Saif vowed to help his father crush his enemies once the revolt began.
An NTC official said Saif al-Islam was in the remote southern desert near Niger and Algeria and was set to flee Libya using a false passport.
He said Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi who, like Saif al-Islam, is wanted by the International Criminal Court, was involved in the escape plan.

@Peshawar: People who glorify Gaddafi obviously you have never been to Libya. The country has dismal infrastructure, has almost NO education system to brag about; their medical facilities are light years behind most underdeveloped countries. The country has over $100 Billion in yearly income, yet has 30% or more unemployment. It has been active in terrorism (remember PAN AM bombing). Years of economic sanctions has crippled its economy. But it has not impacted the Gadaffi's from accumulating over $30 Billion FROZEN in US alone and the Global estimates are that they have stashed over $200 Billion (more then any other thug in the world).
As for US we have our short comings, but we are a land of Law. Even when a US president is given a gift he has to declare its value in his yearly tax filing.
As for N. Korea, Cuba has anything to do with US, Look at S. Korea vs N. Korea and look at Cuba they are still living in shacks exception being those who have escaped to US. Same with Germany compare them East vs West. Soviet Union is another example
Time and time again it will show we will back up people rather then Govt.in any country. history is on our side. People supporting dictators over democracy is perhaps the reason why you do not have democracy in Pakistan. Here is quote:
"Liberty will not descend to a people; a people must raise themselves to liberty; it is a blessing that must be earned before it can be enjoyed" Charles Caleb Colton
It shows that people that people of Iraq or Afghanistan are not ready for it. It has become a dark pit after spending over $3 TRILLION.
As for Saif Al-Islam's end may be like that of his father and brothers as there is NO turning back to 42 years of looting and rampage.
Qadaffi was removed for making African Union and dejecting Arabs. West and their alliances will keep on removing the people who will stand against their interests. New government will spend 15 to 20 years to understand how to govern and then feel that they are working against the interest of their own people. then the time is over for them as well and this will keep on happening. 15 to 20 year are enough to run the western economies on the destruction of others and then they will find another pretext to invade or create revolution of west's choice within the public. Qadaffi was threat to western economies as he was enabling African nations to stand together for their own poler development as African nations have every resource accept peace and confidence they are lacking.
@Aahmed: Muslims all over the world are under the spell of JEWS ....!!!
@Dallas Ali, yes history is littered with examples of empires disappearing in to the dust. Your time has come, okay a few more years but its here. Remember that history will be the final judge and just like in Vietnam, Iraq, bay of pigs, Afghanistan, Korea, central America, etc etc you will be proven to be on the wrong side of right in Libya too.
Under Qaddafi Libya prospered and now you will see it plundered and its population will discover the heavenly effects of neo-liberalism.
And I'd rather see it demolished than named "Libya" Stadium...
Viva la green revolution! Wishing the best to Saif Al-Islam!
Saddam was hanged on the morning of Eid el-Adha, Osama's body was thrown in sea, Qaddafi's body, after display and decomposition, was buried in unknown location of desert. Why be mortally afraid even possessing largest stock of weapons of mass destruction?
I am so proud of our airmen/women who directed the "Hellfire" missile from Predator from Nevada.
Folks I am offended, he should had been buried in the darkness of night. As he was found to be hiding among rats in a sewer pipe is very befitting his life, a coward who slaughtered his own citizens that he is to protect.
For those who portray him as a human is disappointing, he was neither human nor Muslim; he plundered the Libyan Treasury, with only 6 million people and nothing to show for but poverty in an oil rich country is mind boggling.
Pakistan should start the healing process with Libyans by renaming the stadium as "Libya Stadium"
This status that is currently prevailing is Mid-East should be unacceptable to all and will not last very long, Yemen, Syria, Bahrain and S. Evildom will fall and should fall. The rulers in these countries think they have our Govt (US) by their side they could not be mistaken more. History is littered with countries after countries, from Iran to Philippines, US will side toward the people and dump them corrupt dictators in a heart-beat. Enough said.
He was like Tipu Sultan. We should not change the name of Gaddafi Stadium.
@Pragmatist: I know, murder is so much more antiseptic when it's on the live cam feed of an attacking warplane.
even he was a bad man here, we being Muslims are not allowed to insult a death body, belong from any religion...then who are they, who did dis disspeakable act.
The brutality prevalent in Islamic nations is mind numbing. For an outsider looking in, it is inhuman.
Let us hope this is the last display of our atrocities and last insult to human dignity if there is anything left.
I found the fact that his dceomposing body was put on display as distasteful. It reflects that those who overpowered and them killed him are no different than he was. Of course having said that im glad they didnt pull off an Osama whereby the death still remains questionable.
Muslims are killing muslims, another "jihad".
News has appeared in news that he has been buried somewhere in a desert which is not good. This was probably done due to the fact that he was still alive and left to die. Simply afraid from autopsy reasons. Anyhow his body should have been handed over to his immediate family members for proper burial. Remember, he was friend of Pakistan. I would further request all concerned not to change the name of "Qaddafi Stadium".
