Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is considering approaching Kumar Sangakkara to take over the reins of national captaincy once again after displaying exceptional leadership qualities and rescuing the side on numerous occasions, according to officials in Colombo.
Sangakkara, who resigned from captaincy after this year’s World Cup where Sri Lanka lost to India in the final, wanted the team to rebuild under a new leader. However, a strong lobby is pursuing the SLC administrators to hand over the leadership to Sangakkara, highlighting the former captain’s match-saving double ton in the first Test against Pakistan.
While a proposal is being initiated at an official level as well, reports suggest Sangakkara is firm on his stance to deny the role.
