KARACHI: The average number of children per woman in Pakistan went down from 6.7 to 4.1 over the last 40 years but women are still giving birth to more children than they desire. This was discussed at an interactive session organised by Marie Stopes Society and Contraceptive Social Marketing Company. Pakistan’s rural population does not have enough access to contraceptives, healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies (HTSP) services, leading to poor reproductive health and unwanted pregnancies. The session also explored strategies that the public and private sector can adopt to improve access to contraceptives and HTSP services. Particular emphasis was placed on the potential benefits of private-public partnership in the context of the devolution of health services through the 18th Amendment.
