LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a 15-man squad for the upcoming Pakistan A team’s tour to Sri Lanka that starts from August 20. Under-19 team captain Azeem Ghuman will lead the squad for the tri-nation series that features the hosts and South Africa before the team plays two four-day matches against Sri Lanka A from September 9.

Meanwhile, the PCB chief selector Mohsin Khan pledged to bring fresh blood to the Pakistan A squad in order to prepare backup players for the national team.

“Our concentration is on young blood and it is high time for us to bring in the new boys,” Khan told The Express Tribune. “And the tour to Sri Lanka is very important for our A team because the top players can be picked up for the national squad.

“Since the day I took over as the selection committee’s chief, my effort has been to prepare a quick backup for the national team. We have already selected four new faces in the ongoing England tour. In order to sustain the same custom, these young players will be added in the 15-man squad that will also include some veteran players,” maintained Mohsin, who admitted that Pakistan is struggling in the batting and fielding department but is headed for improvement.

He further said the emphasis for setting up a backup is not just for batting but every department. “Until there are players competing for each and every spot in the team, we can’t find improvement,” said the chief selector.

Pakistan A team also includes Under-19 team’s Hammad Azam and talented spinner Zulfiqar Baber, who impressed selectors during the Pentangular Cup in Karachi.
