The meeting, which lasted for around three hours, was attended by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and parliamentarians assigned to the committees.
Director General Military Operations, Major General Ashfaq Nadeem briefed the meeting, which was followed by a session of questions and answers.
The main issues discussed during the meeting were related to national security and the ongoing military operations in the FATA. The situation in Balochistan also came under sharp focus.

we have to understand that at any time our politicians administratively fails the natioinal governance which creates a administrative vacume in the country than Arned Forces being the only the most structured and diciplined institutiton gets sucked in to control the country. Politicians have not worked towardss establishing and strengthening the civil institutions on which the entire nation can depend upon.
Politicians were called in "Lions Den" so no need to comment on what was discussed or got signed on dotted lines. A story goes on when a Lion asked other animals in the jungle whether there is a good smell or bad. Who ever said Good or Bad was immediately swallowed but interestingly the last one which happened to be a Jackal while sensing that he will also be swallowed immediately said Sir, I am suffering from "Flue" and thus got saved. I think no one was suffering from flue and fell "Prey" as usual. Sorry If my comments are hurting but this is what we have to coop with unless our politicians learn to become independent both on internal and foreign policies.
These highly paid govt servants behave as if they are the masters. We have hired them and we should be able to fire them. British masters have gone but they have left their mercenaries in their place. What was the role of these paid British soldiers in the struggle for Pakistani freedom from British? In fact it were these soldiers who have kept British in power from the independence movement of 1857 till 1947. No role of soldiers in the struggle for Pakistan but to protect and perpetuate British rule.
@Bangash, @Meekal Ahmed
At no point had the army agreed to go and give briefing. Army invited 4 subcomittees toGHQ. 2 of them (one led by Senator Rabbani) declined the invitation by stating that Parliament was supreme and they would not go o GHQ. The other 2 obviously did not have self respect. Anyway what can you expect from Chaudhry Shujaat who supported army dictator Musharraf?
@Akhtar: "So after all the huffing and puffing the politicians went back to the GHQ?" No. There were 4 committees that were invited. The one led by Raza Rabbani first said no and then another one said no. The remaiing 2 had not declined and showed upto do the army's bidding.
Dears its not the matter of disgrace if anyone goes to parliament or GHQ . This stereotypic perception needs to be changed now which does not let people to see Army as nation's Protector but destructor . There must have been some constitution provision which permits legislators to visit Armed forces HQs under some condition otherwise we do have Asima Jahangir to poke her nose in any matter regarding forces . Think in nation's perspective !
@Sohaib: Haha, well said Sohaib!
Cheap anti-Army rhetoric again in the comments section. This is a positive meeting, what do you want from the COAS? When you have a President who is ready to sell the country at the promise of a villa in the French Riviera how else do you expect the Army will behave?
Army 1 democracy 0
Why do they all look so scared and worried ?
What is the actual agenda of the meetings? This looks like a session INFORMING the civilians of the money the army already spend or decisions already taken LAST YEAR or earlier!! What should have actually happended - Army Chief standing folded hands in front of the Civilian Defence Secretary at the Parliament making a plea for permission, asking for direction and decisions from the Civilians. Today the opposite the happening!!
geo kiyani.. plz save Pakistan...
I thought Generals were going to brief parliament ?!!!
I think it is disgraceful that these todies went to GHQ for the briefing.
All those rejected in ISSB have same comments towards Army!
put the petty issues aside, for once sake show some unity, Pakistan is facing external aggression and pressure and u guys are still fighting amongst themselves.. shame on all of you
SHAME on them! GENERALS should visit parliament NOT the other way around!
*Why its necessary for a democratic parliament to keep an army chief always around the parliament.Is it a controlled democracy!.Can't Pakistan walk even trot without help of army!Is this army touch is necessary for a mature and independent nation?*
ha ha..so much for civilian supremacy.
What do you mean Kayani discussed issues related to the defense budget? Putting more demands? Or complaining that the DHAI Bill hasnt sailed through parliament yet?
Chaudry Shujaat, sitting next to the COAS! The image is enough.
Anything but the truth will come out of such interactions. Also tells me that the military has decided not to let go of this nation till we do something about it.
