Police seize large cache of weapons from vehicle in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: A vehicle carrying a large quantity of weapons and ammunition was seized by police at the Tarnab check post in Peshawar on Monday.

The Abbottabad-registered vehicle was travelling from Dara Adam Khel to Punjab. The two suspects in the car were also arrested.

Police claim the weapons seized could have been used for terrorist activities.

Authorities have confirmed that the suspects were transporting four Kalashnikovs, 12 rifles, 30 local-made automatic rifles and 38 chargers with 4,500 rounds of ammunition.

A police officer told Express News that they had received prior information of an arms smuggling attempt, and acted on the information, which led to these arrests.

When you have open air markets which sell weapons/ammo with apparent permission from the govt - why all the publicity when you stop a vehicle carrying weapons and ammo? If your serious about controlling this problem close down the weapon markets and weapon mfg's.

We should be regulating these 'legal' ammunition factories up north, what they produce and where it ends up should all be on file and verified. Did 'Saqib Ammunition factory' knew where the 45,000 rounds of heavy ammo were headed? Did they inquire or raise an eyebrow at such a large order? Apart from legal setups, there is a massive black market of arms and ammo up north which is completely unregulated.

We can't rely on these once in a blue moon arms cache seize. The situation is getting worse and there isn't much being done to keep it under control.
