KP Kushwaha, chief paediatrician at the BRD Medical College in the state's hardest-hit Gorakhpur district, said it was one of the worst outbreaks of encephalitis in the impoverished region, which borders Nepal.
"The situation is grim and the epidemic is worse than previous years and with so many patients there are no empty beds at the hospital," Khuswaha said.
"We count such cases since January but most of these casualties have occurred since July."
He said more than 2,400 patients have been admitted to government hospitals in the region so far this year of which at least 430 have died.
"Until Saturday, 336 children and 94 adults have died," Kushwaha told AFP by telephone from the overcrowded hospital where patients were lying two to a bed.
He said 262 patients were undergoing treatment in the state-run facility.
"Everyday between 30 and 40 patients are being brought in for treatment," he said.
Some 215 people, a majority of them children, succumbed to encephalitis in Gorakhpur last year while the death toll from the disease in 2005 was more than 1,400 in Uttar Pradesh.
Eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh are ravaged by encephalitis each year as malnourished children succumb to the virus, officials say.
Encephalitis causes brain inflammation and can result in brain damage. Symptoms include headaches, seizures and fever.
Health experts say 70 million children nationwide are at risk of encephalitis.
Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, has been struggling for years with an encephalitis prevention programme, vaccinating millions of children against the virus.

@Kamran: The fact that Nagaland does not have a separatist movement. That guy needs to read up atleast on history that the only such group in that state is calling for a Greater Nagaland asking for merging of some neighbouring districts with it. Not for separation! An Indian would know whats happening in which state.
@Kamran: That scientific tool is called observation. and no offence, but pakistan is the last place we would go looking for honesty.
@Azaz kahn: by all means, go ahead.. but unless you change your attitude of belittling others instead of concentrating on your development, I am not holding my breath for that moment.
@destro.. your media has given you alot but infact you have nothing.. just wait and watch pak gonna rise agian when we are done with our corrupt leaders..InshaALLAH
@dcomp and @destro
I am not sure what scientific methods you applied while determining the "true identity" of antanu but irrespective of that, I think you guys need to be honest with your countries problems. What antanu is saying is not a lie. If it is a lie, please prove it by presenting counter arguments about his arguments and not about his identity.
@antanu: I know Pakistan hasn't given you much to be proud of... but don't lose hope. Don't be ashamed of your identity.
Dear Author, A correction is required regarding indian map, please exclude Kashmir from indian map. It's occupied by Indian, Kashmir belongs to Pakistan only. Thanks
@antanu.....another Pakistani in the disguise of indian....pathetic...don't be ashamed of your nationality
@antanu You see India with open eyes. Those who cannot see it suffer from what I term the gated community syndrome. India is the most vulberabe of all the countries of South Asia;but those suffering from gated community syndrome are blindfolded. It is sad to see. News published in India papers reveals what is awry. And Indian experts are there to rely on;but, those who suffer from the gated community syndrome choose to pretend they do not read/hear inconvenient truths. For instance. 70% of India's fertile land, if farming methods continue without change, is due to become infertile. That was news published in India. Imagine what that would mean for majority of Indian who rely on farming?
So much for Shining India..
@jd:
Then why single out Pakistan for these evils? Why this holier than thou attitude towards them? Both sides of the border have same problems. Terrorism very much exist in India as in Pakistan. There states like Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh where writ of the govt (ythough elected) does not apply in the same manner as in Pakistan's tribal belt. Perhaps you dont know ...but in Nagaland, I have witnessed military parade of banned separatist group in open with all the media present there. Sadly these incidents never highlighted in Indian media.I love my country and likewise common pakistanis would also be loving their country. However it is very unfortunate that Indian commentators keep on ridiculing them and that too when it is dawning upon Pkaistanis that the must be friendly with India to survive and progress. At this hour instead of encouraging them as a bigger entity, we are leaving no stone unturned to antagonize them further. This should stop.Its the people who can make the difference and we are not helping them in the matter.
@khalis:
It is not Uttar Pradesh only. Move around anywhere in India and you would find equally or even more appalling backwardness. Our government has created some pockets as showcase for international media but truth is absolutely painful. We talk about Hyderabad as Cyberabad...but just move out from the glitter of the city and you will get horrible poverty...the state has highest number of scuicides due to poverty. Our governments have been master in statistical manupulation...and the world has fallen prey to it. Ground realities are different. Mukesh Ambani has a 27 storyed residence, and electricity bill 0f about Rs.50.00 per month and there are millions of poor without a roof on their head.More than 70% OF the population in the country is not getting even 12 hours electric supply and one person is alone using electricity worth Rs.5 million. Its a shame...but we in India gloat about it.And what a joke...the govt. of india has put those, earning Rs.32.00 in cities and Rs.26.00 in rural areas as above poverty line.Why we are posing our selves as better than Pakistan and other countries of the region?We are worst among them when it comes to inequality.
I am from Eastern UP. The disease has taken thousands of lives during the last five years in the region but here is no medical facility to combat the disease. Govt's apathy is appalling.
@ET...please show the correct map...Kashmir is not the part of India..
as usual backward uttar pradesh comes ahead to taint India's image. just like pakistan here also the mullah thru their fatwa factory stops the muslim areas to have vaccination rounds and then get into this deadly virus. UP is biggest place for Indian muslims and the areas identified are muslim dominated.
Indian and pakistan leadership should stop this nuisance fatwas in the interests of people.
Please correct our map thankyou. We have our own dengue to take care of so lets bother about that.
our map got bit by the same mosquito
